In the books Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller, and Fences by August Wilson, there are common themes that run throughout the book. Among these are two, hard working men that can be a bit disillusioned by life. The main character of each book, Willy Loman and Troy Maxson are similar in many ways. They both try hard to be good men and fathers, but unfortunately, they are imperfect in both aspects. Troy distances his self from his youngest son, and many could say that he is too hard and cold towards him. Willy in a way believes that his grown sons could not have done any wrong when they were younger and do no wrong now. But these two fathers are not totally bad. There are many good personal traits that they both display in these books. But as stated as before, they weren't perfect at all.…

At the beginning he starts to forget that he is actually driving and what is going on around him. He tells his wife Linda that “I’m goin’ sixty mile an hour and I don’t remember that last five minutes. I’m- I cant keep my mind to it”(13). Willy’s illusion at first just concerned himself, but as the play progresses his illusion begin to include his whole family. Willy now not only has a warped sense of his greatness, but the greatness of his sons as well. Willy replays Biff’s final football game over and over in his mind, leaving a sense of accomplishment in his mind, yet in reality Biff flunked out of math, never went to college and never truly progressed. Biff tries to prove to his father that he is not the man he believes him to be by saying “ I'm a dime a dozen, and so are you”(116) In this single line is a plea concerning all parts of his illusion yet it goes unwarranted and ignored by the father of his pleading son. At his point Biff has realized his mediocracy, but…
It is human nature to have a desire for understanding oneself and what they can identify themselves as. Many times, the struggle to fulfill this desire can have a significant impact on the people immediately surrounding that person, such as close family and friends. In this case of Willy Loman, the main character in the play Death of a Salesman, his search to find himself had more of an effect on his family than it did in helping him find his identity. Although the act of someone seeking out their identity may help them to find their place in society, it may be more detrimental towards the relationships that person shares than be beneficial for that…
Do you agree with Arthur Miller’s assertion in Tragedy and the Common Man that Willy Loman is indeed a tragic hero? Why or why not?…
In Deaths of a Salesman, Willy Loman is a salesmen who is trying to achieve the American Dream just like everyone else in the world. In his head he believes to be this well liked and huge successful salesmen. In reality he is more of a self-conscious man who tries to live his fantasy he has in his head while being deceitful to not only himself but his own family as well. Throughout Death of a Salesman, Willy has several slogans that he attempts to live his life by.…
John Steinbeck called his novel about migratory farmhands during The Great Depression. The title Of Mice and Men is Steinbeck alluding to Robert Burns’ poem “To a Mouse “. Burn states “the best laid plains of mice and mean oft go awry “. Therefore there are many reasons why this quote can relate to the relationship of George and Lennie and also others of this book. Here are my three main reasons why this quote is the main idea of the story and why Steinbeck’s message is true about the real world.…

John Wideman’s “Our Time” portrays a different side of a convicted felon that is often never seen. His brother Robbie was sentenced to life in prison after being involved in a murder and robbery. Writing a book about his brother was something he had never done before and shows a very interesting approach to getting the reader’s attention. Due to the fact that he had never written a book like this before Wideman had to overcome some obstacles he had never faced before. As Wideman began writing the book he realizes that he has a hard time grasping the fact that he is a successful novelist and his brother a felon. Throughout the passage Wideman speaks to the reader often expressing the necessity to learn how to put himself in his brother’s shoes and listen to his story, without distorting it with his own perception, in order to truly understand his brother. With no true begging, middle, and end the passage is broken up into three parts that show how the book comes together.…
Hey Pops. I wish we could’ve had one more night out on the town, whistling at cute girls as they walked by. I’m getting married you know; I was going to settle down and fix everything while you were still here. We had so many great memories in that house from when Biff and I were younger, especially when you had that red Chevy. That day when Biff was scoring a touchdown in your honor and we all piled up in the Chevy was one of my favorite memories. A time when things were simpler and we looked to you as a hero. You’ve always been a hero for all of the dedicated sales trips you made to support the family and pay for the house. At some point after high school, Biff had always seen you in a different way. He felt that he had to separate himself from us. He could never take orders as well after that summer that he visited you in Boston, but we can’t possibly imply that was caused by you. I wish you and Biff didn’t have such different perspectives on work and the success you wanted him to live up to. He had contradicting dreams he wished to fulfill which you could never accept him for. Biff had always seen me as being the more successful son similar to how you had seen Ben as more accomplished. Maybe this was the reason you had always been tough on him to make something of himself. Ben’s success was mostly based on luck, and you shouldn’t have continued to regret not going with him to Alaska. You had your own way of working and you did an amazing job raising and caring for us. Even Ma was proud of all of your accomplishments, but you didn’t feel that you had done all that much with your life. The secret to being happy is maintaining low expectations, and you had kept yours too high to keep yourself satisfied with what you had. We were too stubborn to realize that you were a victim of your profession. Driving back from a sales trip in solitude without having…

Everything in my reality—the activities I engage in, the friendships I acquire, the family I love, the beliefs I form (about art, politics, religion, morality, the afterlife)—are predicated upon the assumption that my life is truly and authentically mine to live, not something counterfeit or staged. I am the author that gives meaning to my reality. I am, so to speak, the star of the show. In Peter Weir’s film about the ultimate “reality” TV show The Truman Show (1998), the ever ominous “what is real” question begs the assumption that the lives we live are really ours. It is an important text to consider with respect to those other difficult questions we all seem to either explore or avoid: Who am I? Why am I here? What’s it all about? Am I living in a counterfeit world where my choices ultimately bear no significance? If so, is a meaningful life even possible?…
The brand we have chosen for our research is ‘Vitasoy’ and in brief it is commonly known as ‘Vita’. The product we have selected is the beverage ‘Lemon Tea’. It is a product produced in Hong Kong. The aim of the company was to promote healthy beverages to its consumer. The popularity of Vitasoy began in the late 1940’s when soy bean products were introduced such as the ‘Soy Bean Milk’ and ‘Malt Soy Bean Milk’. During the 1980’s, Vitasoy began to introduce different fruit products to its industry and market. This was a successful attempt to extend their market not only within Hong Kong but also internationally. ‘Vitasoy’ became popular because of its convenience and a wide variety of different beverages. Ever since the late 1980’s, Vitasoy began to produce traditional beverages such as ‘Lemon Tea’ and ‘Red Bean Fleece’ which was originally introduced in a smaller café known as ‘Cha Chan Ting’. This emergence struck the market because customers did not need to walk into a ‘Cha Chan Ting’ to enjoy their favorite beverage. They could also appreciate their favorite drink in a smaller, cheaper and non-time consuming environment. ‘Vita’ is one of the oldest brands in selling traditional Hong Kong beverages in the market so therefore we have chosen ‘Lemon Tea’ as our aim.…
The sun was shining and I could feel the pavement burning the bottoms of my bare feet. I stood outside the hotel, awaiting the arrival of family members I haven’t seen in quite some time. It could not have been a more gorgeous day to have a wedding. Today was an important day, and I couldn’t help but wish it were me who was the one getting married. I never understood the importance of a wedding, until I was there watching my sister experience every girl’s dream by marrying the man that she loves. From helping her get ready and putting on her wedding dress, to watching the ceremony and hearing what the vows really mean, and then finally to the reception, the celebration that made everyone say, “Congratulations, I am so happy for you.” Because this day was filled with such joy, happy tears, and laughter, my sister’s wedding was definitely a wedding I will never forget.…
