The Roman Empire is the term conventionally used to describe the Ancient Roman polity in the centuries following its reorganization under the leadership of Octavian (better known as Augustus), until its radical reformation in what was later to be known as the Byzantine Empire. Roman Empire is also used as translation of the expression Imperium Romanum, probably the best known Latin expression where the word "imperium" is used in the meaning of a territory, the "Roman Empire", as that part of the world where Rome ruled. The historical nonfiction book The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson provides a comparison between the impressive White City of the Chicago World's Fair and the horror of H.H. Holmes's murder spree. It starts off in 1890 when Chicago finds out it's going to be hosting the World's Fair of 1893. Winning the bid meant so much to Chicago because it indicated that the city would finally be able to shake off the perception that it was a hog-slaughtering, greedy and isolated city. The Fair would create a more positive global reputation for Chicago. Larson argues that it was Chicago’s pride that led its people to dream big enough to win the bid for the World’s Fair. They were motivated to outdo the Paris World’s Fair of 1889, that produced the…

From C.A. 300 CE to 476 CE Rome began a steady decline to its collapse. Some historians disagree with this and have other theories. One of the other theories is that the Roman Empire did not collapse as the Eastern Empire did not collapse until “Fall of Rome at Constantinople in 1453.” The base of this theory is that the Eastern Empire became the Byzantium Empire, however it was no longer the Roman Empire as there were no longer any Roman Emperors. Another theory by Peter Wells is “The Roman Empire “fell” only in the minds of people who had a particular and limited view of what the Roman Empire was and who understood events such as Alaric’s capture of Rome in A.D. 410 as marking its end.” Wells argues that the change was extremely gradual and continued well past 476 CE. While Wells theory is more valid, the empire still did not exist after 476 CE.…
