In Patrick Henry’s “Speech in the Virginia Convention,” he remarked, “I have but one lamp by which my feet are guided and that is the lamp of experience.” Libraries are built on books, schools rely on them. Millions of people have written them to share knowledge and experiences with others. The value of a book is immeasurable, yet some things just can’t be learned by reading books alone.…
In Shakespeare's play A Midsummer Night's Dream, metaphors concerning the moon, flowers, and Cupid are prevalent and have a significant impact on the play. The play focuses on a romantic situation between four Athenians: Hermia, Lysander, Helena, and Demetrius. As the story unravels, many comparisons are made to enhance the language and the messages that the characters try to convey. The moon is personified as a chaste woman who can be both gentle and fiery. Flowers are used as romantic symbols with the power to influence love. Cupid is personified as an armed child who strikes people's hearts even if that love was not meant to be.…
“Life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forwards” (Kierkegaard). In the great debate of “Knowledge vs Experience”, each side of the story has its pros and cons when applied to the real world. Where knowledge allows its user to recall vast amounts of information about any learned subject, it fails to be able to apply that information quickly in the real world. Conversely, with experience, there is generally a lack of information from the get-go, however the lessons learned from actually experiencing a situation can be applied to further real life situations, and so forth. If I had to choose between living with solely knowledge or experience, personally I would have to pick experience over knowledge, due to its ability to have its lessons applied to later situations in the real world.…
Books created worlds we’ve never seen, they questioned our philosophical purpose, and they answered it. From manuals to stories, books have been handed down as a collection of knowledge; but for the first time in millennia we’re raising entire generations who have never read a novel, short story or even a poem. David McCullough (2008), author of “The Love of Learning” defines for us the difference between facts and wisdom. Data is irrelevant until we have made the judgment to make it important and learn from it. We cannot memorize facts and call ourselves learned; we must look a layer deeper and find what the facts mean to us. “Learning is acquired mainly from books, and most readily from great books.” (McCullough, 2008, p. 2) Without books we are only being fed data, numbers and words without any true meaning. (McCullough,…

William Shakespeare has been thought for centuries to be the greatest writer from his time. He is known for his plays and poems but perhaps most famously for his tragic love story Romeo and Juliet. Many adaptations of this play have been created but nothing close to the original. Through out the play there are many figures and allusions that are present in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet such as Echo. The Greek mythological figure, Echo, is an important allusion in Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet because her story emphasizes Romeos selfish nature which is part of his tragic flaw.…
Statement: People generally put more trust in what they have learned from themselves than in what they have learned from themselves than in what they learn from others. Few people however are really motivated to learn anything on their own. They are much more apt to learn when others are willing to teach them. Even though learning from others means occasionally learning things that are not useful or important, people are still better off when they learn from others.…

Books have an amazing effect to advance society. “Instantly, the book becomes, noxious. This effects an improvement on society. Therefore, Emerson proves have their usefulness.…
Throughout my life, reading and writing have impacted me in a negative and a positive way. My passion for both reading and writing did not begin similarly to that of my peers in elementary school; however, as time goes on, I began to fall in love with other people’s works in literature. Starting off in elementary school, and progressing through middle school, I was not fond of the concept of reading, but I was able to shift my mind in high school by discovering the books I was passionate about. To start off, my journey begins in elementary school.…
