Course Overview
Chemistry is a central natural science that bridges the gap between physics and biology. Understanding the key concepts of general chemistry is both necessary and beneficial for a broad spectrum of science, engineering and healthcare majors. However, without some hands-on laboratory experience, this understanding is likely to be incomplete, if not deficient, because chemistry is mostly an experimental (empirical) science. This course would provide the actual lab experience that is useful or even essential for a natural scientist, an engineer or a clinician/pharmacist. Beyond majors in chemistry the target student audience can pursue a career in medicine, biology, physics, forensic science, engineering, geology, ecology, and etc. Beyond helping to understand concepts of chemistry and improving problem solving skills, this course is likely to enhance students’ lab techniques. The course may even improve dexterity (which is essential for many occupation from cooking to surgery) of some students. All benefits that may be associated with serious and responsible learning of this course are too numerous to be listed here.
The course goes hand in hand with General Chemistry lecture course, which covers the following topics:
1. CHEMISTS AND CHEMISTRY.
2. ATOMS, MOLECULES AND IONS.
3. STOICHIOMETRY.
4. TYPES OF CHEMICAL REACTIONS AND SOLUTION STOICHIOMETRY.
5. GASES.
6. ENERGY, ENTHALPY, AND THERMOCHEMISTRY.
7. QUANTUM MECHANICS AND ATOMIC THEORY.
8. BONDING: GENERAL CONCEPTS.
