Introduction

In the history of science, scientists have tried to explore our world and one of the most famous fields of science is about the "Sky". Thus, they look for the ways to travel in the sky. Nowadays we have airplane as a public transport in the sky. Looking back on hundreds years ago, we find that the predecessor of airplane is what we called the 'Hot air balloon'. In this project, we are looking forward to investigate the phenomenon lying behind the hot air balloon. Through the experiment and a sea of found knowledge, we hope that we can know more about the science.

The experiment we would like to do is called Hot Air Baloon. To do this expreiment, we should prepare:
-some plastic bag ,
-some aluminum foil ,
-some candles ,
-some straws ,
-a stop watch. Firstly, we should stick two straws as a cross and stick it into the mouth of the plastic bag to hold up the plastic bag. Then, place the aluminum foil (with candles on it) on the intersection of the straw. Finally, light the candles and the plactic bag is rising up. In this project, we have done two experiment. The first one is to compare the speed that the balloon used to rise up when the number of candles is changed. We have tried it 3 times, the first time is used the balloon with 2 candles but it cannot rise up.The secons time is used the balloon with 4 candles and it could rise up slowly. The third time is used the balloon with 6 candles and it could rise up quickly. But why more candles and less time is used? It is because more air particles are heated and the air particles move and hit the plastic bag more rapidly. Finally the hot air balloon flies. The second one is to campare the speed that the balloon used to rise up when the size of plastic bag is changed. We have also tried it 3 times. In the first time, we used a large plastic bag to test but it haven't risen up. Then, we tested with medium size plastic bag and it rose up slowly. Finally, we tested with small plastic bag and it rose up faster than that with wedium sixe plastic bag. But why smaller size of the plastic bag and less time is used?It is because smaller size of the plastic bag and the air particles move and hit the wall of plastic bag more rapidly. Finally the hot air balloon flies. In conclusion, these two elements can reduce the time that the balloon rise up :
1)A balloon with more lighted candles
2)A balloon with a smaller size of plastic bag.
Comments

We have learnt a lot of things through doing this project, for example why a hot air balloon can rise and float.
During the experiment, we have encountered many difficulties and problems. We found that plastic bag is very flammable. The fire of the candles burnt up many plastic bags and thus the hot air balloon didn’t rise.
Although we have failed many times, we keep on trying. In the end, we solved and overcame most of the problems and we succeed! This attitude is very precious.
We noticed that the amount of the candles must be more because there will have enough air particles to raise the plastic bag. The material and the size of the plastic bag are also important.
We think that this experiment is very useful for we have learnt many skills, knowledge and even theoretic. It widens our knowledge about science. Also, we had used the knowledge that learnt at F.1. This can help us to explain the principle. Moreover, we learnt to cooperate with our classmates and to handle the fire safely.

According to several witnesses, there was a strange foil type metal that when bent or crinkled, would resume its original shape. Some people said that it was almost fluid like in the way that it retracted back to its original form. There was also some kind of light weight wood, which could not be broken, or burned, despite many people trying to do so. Also found, were strange metal beams that had some kind of undecipherable hieroglyphics written on them, in a purple “ink,” rubber strips, and some kind of paper like substance. How could these things be identified as a mere weather balloon?…

If you do not have access to a small water fountain around you, can use a small bucket or tub to produce the same effect. But you have to ensure that the water is warm. So, if you are using a water fountain, you can carry out this experiment on a warm summer day when the water in the fountain is tepid, else you will need a bucket or a tub. To begin the experiment, you need to first pound the dry ice into small pieces. To do so, place the dry ice into a plastic packet and tie the packet up firmly. Now pound the packet with the help of a hammer. Once the dry ice has broken down into small pieces, scatter a few pieces in the warm water. You will immediately see white smoke rising from the water. This is nothing but condensed carbon dioxide. The quantity of smoke will depend on how hot the water is and also on the quantity of dry ice put in the water. For constant smoke, you will need somebody to constantly replenish the dry ice in the water.…

The sky lantern, an early unmanned hot air balloon, was known in China from ancient times. It was invented by a Chinese General, Zhuge Liang during Shu Dynasty for war purpose to scare the enemy troops. The hot air balloon is where oil lamp installed under a large paper bag, and the bag floated in the air due to the lamp heating the air. This device was documented in the paper later on. According to Joseph Needam, hot-air balloons in China were known from the 3rd century BC.…
