As my aunt has Down syndrome I never realised that there is so much support out there for people with Down syndrome. Each person with Down syndrome is an individual and all need different help and support as well as they all growth up differently. They are not all the same. From doing this assignment, I have went through childhood, adolescences, adulthood and older adulthood needs and they all are similar to a typical developing person but just need a lot more support.
For a person with Down syndrome, development continues to adult life. They are more involved in the community such as Special Olympics, bingo and swimming. Although they still may need support, if they are encouraged to achieve things they will. This allows them to live independently maybe live home and have a job.
From doing this assignment, it is recommended that a child needs to interact with others such as going to main stream school. They need a physiotherapist from an early age to provide support. They need physical support such as walking due to their poor muscle tone. By sending a child with Down syndrome to activities in the community such as gymnastics and swimming improves their motor skills as well as increasing social learning opportunities. Research suggests that a child with Down syndrome going to a main stream school improves their spoken language and literacy skills. This would allow people with Down syndrome have a better chance of securing a job in later
