Explain How To Overcome Communication Barriers
When overcoming communication barriers sign language, pictures, facial expressions and body language can help to overcome them. Getting to know the residents, their preference, likes and dislikes will enable myself and staff to know what is best way to communicate with residents.
Communication with residents can involve complex and delicate issues and require sensitive handling. It can also involve having to give information or set boundaries that they do not like and will challenge both verbally and physically. In these cases, it is important to be calm, explain why, and not to show any anger towards them.

The Achilles heel of most business is profit, the ability to keep up those margins and cut losses. Company Q's bottom line was too shallow resulting in the closing of two stores. Both locations were in heavy metropolitan areas with high crime rates and poor neighborhoods. Such actions can have a ripple effect on the community, causing current issues to intensify while adding to unemployment. Poverty that already existed within the community will be more prevalent now. The increase in poverty will hurt the other stores still open, as they will now be targeted for theft. Company Q 's decision to throw away day old items is not socially responsible. They are being socially irresponsible by putting needs of the company first and disregarding the needs of the community. Furthermore, Company Q is being wasteful by throwing food away that could be used by the less fortunate. Company Q is also labeling good employees as untrustworthy employees. This can create tension between owners and staff. The actions of company Q are going to hurt their business in the long run, because community and staff will notice the lack of social responsibility. People want to shop at and work for a place they are proud of and feel loyal to.…

For the one-to-one interaction I played dominoes with resident A in the dining room after they finished dinner whilst some of the other residents were asleep. Whilst I played dominoes with resident A, I used different communication skills like listening and showed that I was listening by giving head nods and smiled at resident A. I also used non-verbal communication such as eye-contact with resident A, I felt that this worked because the resident was nodding and that showed me that they were listening and understood me. I spoke slowly and clearly with resident A so that they could hear and understand me and I knew that the resident could hear and understand me because they responded straight away and wasn’t asking me to repeat myself. During the game of domino 's I asked resident A questions, such as "did you enjoy dinner?", "are you ok?" I feel like this made the resident feel more comfortable around me. There was the use of silence when we were playing dominoes but it only lasted a few seconds. After we had finished a few games of dominoes I got up and patted resident A 's shoulder and said "well done". The proximity between me and the resident was good because the resident could hear me clearly and I knew this because they were replying back to me straight away and I didn’t have to repeat myself several times.…

As an assistant manager I have a responsibility to my residents, to accommodate, and provide support for all residents, and their individual communication needs. By performing assessments with individual residents, I am able to understand the problems they have with communication, and actions and aids we can supply, to enable them to communicate effectively. In assessing communication needs, I need to consider each individual, and cater for the individual’s needs. I need to consider ‘groups’ of individuals, for instance males/females, foreign speaking users, deaf/Blind users etc. The actions and aids we supply for communication needs should benefit not just the individual, but the group of service users as a whole, and encourage interaction, inclusion, and social contacts. Regular reviews should be performed to ensure individual needs are being met and I do this during my 3 monthly care plan reviews.…
