Moving to a new country with a completely different culture and school system was a new and exciting experience, however it was one I had never encountered before. Moving countries meant leaving a familiar environment behind. I found the Canadian school system difficult to integrate into. I struggled to make friends and found the semestered school system confusing and challenging. I realised that I was struggling to succeed and knew that I had to make important changes in the way I approached integrating into the Canadian system. I sought out the help of my favourite teacher at Carson Graham and asked if she could introduce me to some of my peers to overcome the initial barrier to me making friends. Through my experiences, I have observed the difference in my successes when playing on a team that works together compared with one that does not. I have learnt that when players work together, the overall success of the team and individuals is greater. I have been fortunate enough to have the opportunity to umpire youth field hockey games where I have been able to develop and apply my leadership abilities. To be able to effectively umpire I need to take control of the playing area and the players to ensure that the rules are followed and enforced. This is to ensure that all the youth have fun and feel engaged in the sport. Due to my years playing under, both good and bad, referees I was able to find the middle ground between being overly officious and lenient. Going into the future, I will continue to referee and build my skills as a leader. From this experience, I have developed a much greater sense of confidence in how I handle and present myself on and off the hockey
