There are a number of key aspects of policies, codes of practice and guidelines with educational organisations. There are distinct differences between legislation and guidance. Legislation is the broader framework, while regulations provide specific details on how to comply with the law (UK Parliament, 2021).
Arguably the most universally applicable legislation to any organisation in the United Kingdom is the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. Quality maintenance refers to a process which aims to ensure zero defects in an organisation. It achieves this by understanding the process between the workforce, materials and methods to achieve an end product (Industry Forum, 2024). Quality maintenance is part of the reflective process of an organisation. Other pillars of industry include, focused improvement, autonomous maintenance, planned maintenance, training and education, early management, safety, health and environment and the office. According to Industry Forum (2024), quality maintenance is the 6th pillar of industry.
Applying quality maintenance to the Functional Skills programme happens further along the quality assessment reflective process because other factors such as maintaining a focused improvement approach and planned maintenance (such as improvement of curriculum development) must be met in order to assess and evaluate the success of the course against the two phases of the quality maintenance
