Facts: Judd approached the defendant in an attempt to calm him. The defendant then punched Judd in the face. A brief fight ensured between Judd and the defendant during which a shelf with ceramic mugs fell on the floor and shattered. Doucette, Anderson and Potkaj attempted to break up the fight. Anderson and Potkaj grabbed Judd by his arms to restrain him while Doucette came up behind the defendant and wrapped his arms around him to stop the fight. The defendant broke free from Doucette and attacked Judd again. Judd freed himself from Potkaj and Anderson in response to the defendant’s attack and punched the defendant again. The defendant then picked up a kitchen knife with an eight inch blade from the counter and strode six feet from the counter toward Judd, swinging and stabbing with the knife.…

The number of cases of domestic violence is staggering. When people think about the word domestic violence they only think about the people that are directly involved in the altercation. The “silent victims” in domestic violence are the kids that witness the violence and have lasting effects from it (Child Welfare Information Gateway2009). We will review some studies that go over just some of the impacts that domestic violence has on the children in the household. For the remainder of this study review when you see you will see DV in place of domestic violence. Children that have been exposed to DV can…

For this service learning project I went downtown first to the Daley center, then to the Circuit Court of Cook County. While there, I observed various criminal court cases, most which dealt with domestic violence and abuse. There was one particular case that stuck out to me the most. Torense Arnold vs.Latrarice Johnson was the second criminal case, with the man being the defendant against charges of domestic battery, burglary, and felony. Latrice Johnson had described her brutal relationship with Torense as an abusive obsession in which she wanted to get out of. She had been dragged by her hair throughout their house and had nail marks on her hands and face. Torence then pleaded guilty and was held at a 150,000 dollar bond, Latrice was issued an order of protection against him and her siblings.…

In the article, "An Evaluation of Police Compliance with Domestic Violence Documentation Policy Reform: Improving the Identification of Exposed Children," by John P. Shields it explains how a new reform changed the way police document domestic violence situations. In the 60's and 70's police documentation was inadequate. The police had a lack of interest, they collected little evidence, classified the situation as a misdemeanor, and barely arrested anyone. On top of that departments didn't usually train officers to identify children that had been exposed to domestic violence, so this made it difficult to further any actions.…
You might know October for the bright red orange leafs that cover the sidewalks and for the scary holiday Halloween, but October is also domestic violence awareness month. Community College of Philadelphia is proudly hosting their 2nd annual Clothesline Project to raise awareness for domestic violence victims. The Clothesline Project can be viewed in the Mint Rotunda. The Clothesline is an experience that radiates a feeling of sorrow and a call for help and has left me sadness and anger.…
According to Gosselin (2014), defendants charged with aggravated assault for domestic violence court outcomes were the same as or more severe than the court outcomes for non-domestic violence cases. As well, domestic violence offenders received more convictions and longer sentences than non-domestic violence defendants. Based on a study involving aggravated assault cases, perpetrators of domestic assaults are less likely to be granted release from jail while the criminal case is pending known as a pretrial release than those defendants of non-domestic cases and the courts are more likely to issue protective orders for aggravated domestic assaults (Gosselin, 2014). The courts often issue a protective order against those defendants charged with aggravated domestic assault if the judge grants a pretrial release.…
The California Penal Code defines battery as the “willful and unlawful use of force or violence against the person of another.” Spousal battery, then, occurs when people use force or violence against their spouses, former spouses, children, fiancé or fiancée, or some other person with who they cohabitate. An alleged victim does not have to be physically injured in order for a person to be charged with this offense. Rather, they may be charged in any case when forceful or unwanted contact occurred.…
