Explain The Importance Of Legislations That Support Equality, Diversity And Inclusion
Equality refers to treating each one in the setting fairly, regardless of culture and background. Diversity refers to respecting and valuing different cultures. Inclusion refers to ‘everyone is included’, despite differences. In the UK there are many legislations that support equality, diversity and inclusion, like the Equality Act 2010 and Disability Act 1995.
Equal opportunity approach is based on the principle of providing fair and similar opportunities to all and ensure people are not discriminated against on the basis of criteria such as race, religion etc. Everybody should have same access to opportunities and positive intervention. Respecting each individual plays a very important role in successfully implementing this approach. For example; in my school we do have ramps for children with wheel chairs close to the boarding and de-boarding areas. We have similar timings for TA’s and teachers. All parents are treated equally and are attended to in a similar fashion. The policies and procedures mention the need for treating each person with equality and are mentioned during induction process.
In the UAE, the local children can get admitted only in national schools, however the other nationalities have the privilege to be admitted to schools following any curriculum however cannot be admitted to National Schools. In my school all nationalities are welcome. We have granted admission to Spanish and American. Therefore all nationalities are welcome and there is equality. However in my setting as a manager lately I have been forced to deny admission to 2 local girls whose mother is an Indian however since the father is a local they fall under the ‘local’ bracket and must attend a local

Diversity means variety, for example age, sex, sexual orientation, physical characteristics such as height, weight and skin colour, ability, personal experiences and personal attributes, such as beliefs, values and preferences. Inclusion is about accepting everyone regardless of difference. It is also about getting rid of intolerance of differences and providing help and support where appropriate. A prejudice is an attitude or way of thinking based on an unfounded, unreasonable pre-judgement of an individual, particular group of people or situation, rather than on a factual assessment. Prejudices can be positive or negative. If we are positively prejudiced towards someone, we think well of them. On the other hand, if we are negatively prejudiced against someone, we tolerate them less. In the main, negative prejudices develop against people who are different in some way. Discrimination happens when we act out our negative prejudices. Discriminatory behaviour results in unfair, unjust treatment.
