Teacher training alone does not equip teachers well enough to manage health and safety issues in the school environment. Also, support staff often don’t have the basic training to manage health and safety issues associated with working with children. Thus, to be part of the improvement process and to better understand and manage health and safety issues in the school environment, professional development in the form of health and safety trainings, technical assistance, resource sharing and networking opportunities are required. Trainings may include orientation and periodic refresher courses as well as on-the-job training that are tailored to the needs of children and staff as well as the goals of the school. Making the school a friendly and collaborative learning environment for staff will help foster the sense of belonging among staff and encourage them to take an active part in the school improvement
