Water, bile enzymes and mucus contribute to the change in consistency. The villi are essential for the absorption of digested nutrients. The cells of the villi transport food from the digestive tract into the bloodstream where they can be used by the body. The villi aid in absorption by increasing the surface area of the intestine and they contain specialized cells which transport different types of nutrients into the blood.
The liver
The livers main function within the digestive system is to process the nutrients absorbed from the small intestine. Bile from the liver secreted into the small intestine also plays an important role in the digestion of fats. The liver is a large organ that sits on the right side of the stomach. The liver has two large sections, called the right and the left lobes. The gallbladder sits under the liver, along with parts of the pancreas and intestines. The liver and these organs work together to digest, absorb, and process food. The liver's main job is to filter the blood coming from the digestive tract, before passing it to the rest of the body. The liver also detoxifies chemicals and metabolizes drugs. As it does so, the liver secretes bile that ends up back in the intestines. The liver also makes proteins important for blood clotting and other
