What activities are typically undertaken during the pretrial period? (That is, before the start of a criminal trial)? A activity that happens during a pretrial is the first (initial) appearance, meaning that they have to make an appearance before a magistrate or lower-court judge where which the lawfulness of the arrest of the suspect has been initially reviewed and the suspect is informed of the charges they will be facing, meaning that they will be informed and given the formal charges, they will be advised of their rights, be given a bail, and be given the chance to retain a lawyer or to have one appointed to accused. The first appearance is also called the initial appearance or magistrate’s review. A first appearance can involve a probable cause hearing meaning that if an arrest was made without any warrant. A judicial officer will review the report to ensure that the arrest that was made is supported by the probable cause. …show more content…
If the crimes are very serious or if the defendant is on flight risk they would be held in jail until their trial date, this is also called pretrial detention. Then comes bail, which is actually the most common in the majority of cases, bail actually serves two main purposes, it helps reassure reappearance of the accused, and it can also prevents un-convicted person from suffering imprisonment. Following that is the grand jury, which involves the hearing of evidence to determine whether there is enough evidence to bring accused person to a trial, it kind of determine if the trial will continue or not, which is a very crucial part, there should be sufficient evidence to pass the step. Finally there is arraignment and the plea, which is the first appearance of the defendant before the trial court, which offers the defendant to enter a plea
