A physical change is where the appearance or traits of the substance/item change these changes can be, change of size, shape, color, volume and state. The molecules in the substance can be rearranged but their composition must stay the same. No new substance can be formed. They can be reversed most of the time.
2. Describe one example of a physical change in everyday life and explain why it is a physical change.
Melting an ice cube is a common physical change. Melting an ice cube is a physical change because ice is a solid but when melted it turns into a liquid, which also means a change of shape has happened indicating a physical change has happened.
3. Explain what is meant by the term ‘chemical change’.
A chemical change is where the Atoms in one or more substances are rearranged to …show more content…
Describe one example of a chemical change in everyday life and explain why it is a chemical change.
Plants apply a chemical reaction called photosynthesis to convert carbon dioxide and water into food and oxygen. This is one of the most common chemical reactions and also one of the most important since this is how we get fruit and how some animals get food. This is a chemical reaction because two different substances combined to create a new substance which results in food.
5. Suggest a reason why it may be difficult to determine absolutely that a chemical change has taken place (remember atoms are too small to see).
It may be difficult to determine a chemical change because no obvious change has happened such as a change in color, change in temperature or change in odor. Another way might not know if chemical change has happened is if you don't know there are two different substance.
6. Your teacher will have instructed you to dispose of the waste from this practical in a variety of ways. Explain, giving examples from this practical, why it is important that waste from Chemistry experiments is disposed on
