During this time, the British had imposed on their land, seeking to control trade and commerce across American waters, an aspect that did not sit well with the War Hawks. They believed that the only response that the British would listen to was war, hence the need to advocate for it. When it came to trade, the British decided “Great Britain should be the commercial center, to which it should be the spring of power,” Thomas Pownall, “Administration of the Colonies” (1764). Colonists were told what they could ship, how much they could ship, and were made to pay high taxes for the allowance to do it. Also, the soldiers the British…

At that time, Britain was at war with France, and they depended on a maritime economic blockade to defeat France. However, America was a neutral side, so American merchants tried to get commercial interests by trading with the French. England wanted to block this trading, so they issued twelve “Orders in Council” to impeded American trade with France during 1783-1812. The new laws caused a lot of difficulties for American merchants because it required many of special licenses. They also made the American economy was into a depression. The leaders of the war also realized that the only way to stand against the British, was by persuading the public to join the cause. This was done through the use of pamphlets, essays, sermons, speeches and political cartoons. Those who did not want a war to break out, also employed similar strategies, although they also used historical evidence to buttress their arguments. It is important to keep in mind, that the fair majority of the colonists weren’t radically on one side or the other; nevertheless, it was decided (through propaganda) that the benefits of war outweighed the…

One of the main reasons the war started was because of Britain's adopted policy of mercantilism. When the British colonists first settled in the New World, they were allowed to grow and thrive with minimal interference from Britain, until Britain began using the colonies as their main resource in their practice of mercantilism. In 1651, the Navigation Acts were passed, which were a series of laws that prevented the use of foreign ships for trade between Britain and its colonies. Britain merely thought of the colonies as cows to be milked and utilized the colonies for their raw goods. They imported the raw goods from the colonies, processed them into manufactured goods, and sold back the manufactured goods to the colonies for a high profit.…

After the French and American War, Britain passed a series of acts that placed on everyday goods in order to pay back war debt. The colonists fought each of these acts - not because of the taxes themselves- but rather due to the lack of parliamentary representation for the colonies when these acts were passed. In 1774, Britain passed the Intolerable Acts and brought tensions between the Crown and the colonists to a new high. While most colonists believed that there should not be any violent action taken against the British, most agreed that the Intolerable Acts were not acceptable and were a violation of their rights. Because of this tension between the colonies and Britain, the First and Second Continental Congress came about.…

Alongside preventing war with Britain, Jefferson hoped to stress Britain and France’s supply system and to result the two into making peace with one another or at least to stop interfering with American ships but the embargo consequently turned out to be more harmful to the U.S. Jefferson repealed the act and three days later left office. In March of 1809 James Madison came into presidency. Madison sent a message to Congress approaching several issues caused by the British; impressment, harassment of American commerce, blockading Americans ships from European ports and attacks from savages and at the time a group of young legislators in Congress known as the “War Hawks” began to urge and agitate Madison more and more to go to war with Britain and the leader of the War Hawks, Henry Clay, believed war would give America their respect as an independent nation and restore their prestige. On June 18, 1812, James Madison signed the official Declaration of…
