Explain Why I Want To Become An Outdoor Instructor
I believe I would be ideally suited to this position due to my extensive experience working as an outdoor instructor. During this time I have gained a broad range of skills which I believe will enable me to excel in this position. Working in an outdoor environment requires self motivation and self organisation to a high degree as well as being able to engage with a wide range of people including children and vulnerable adults. This engagement requires a dynamic and proactive approach to engage participants in adventurous activities. It also requires a good sense of humour in order to facilitate this approach and to allow clients to be comfortable in an unfamiliar environment. When conducting these activities a degree of persuasiveness is required to influence people to push their boundaries and participate in activities outside of their comfort zones. …show more content…
I am able to listen and empathise with their situation and draw from my own experiences to encourage participation. Due to the length of time I have operating in potentially dangerous environments, I have developed a calm approach to demanding situations and am able to assess risk in a quick and dynamic manner. These situations often require excellent leadership skills and innovative solutions in order to facilitate a positive outcome for all involved. As well as working as an instructor in various outdoor activities, I also posses NGB qualifications in kayaking, canoeing, stand up paddle boarding, rafting and river rescue. I have been coaching canoeing and kayaking to the highest standard and can coach several different disciplines. Kayaking is my main passion in life and introducing people to the sport and seeing how it can change someones life for the better is extremely rewarding. I am able to assess risk quickly and effectively and can perform dynamic risk assessments whilst carrying out my normal

I interviewed my brother for this project. My brother is the Region 5 Coordinator for the Florida Division of Emergency Management, and he is being inducted into the position as National Commander for the Sons of the American Legion. I chose to interview him for several reasons including his success over the years. I have seen him work his way up the corporate ladder, I know about his work ethics, and I have seen the determination that it takes to do what he needs to do in order to continue to be successful. I have learned a considerable amount of things from him throughout the years and I have found him to be strong leader and motivator. At one time he started a volunteer disaster recovery team that assisted local public officials including police, fire, and ambulance personnel in many man-made and natural disasters. He started the team with only three members and took it to over 300 members who were very closely networked with various fire and police departments throughout three counties in central Florida, the team had various training sessions through the Federal Emergency Management Agency, CERT, National Weather Service, and the American Red Cross. He has proven himself to be an effective leader on many occasions over the years.…

The outdoors has been an integral part of who I am, allowing me to connect deeply with my dad and to forge a new bond with my sister. Growing up with amazing access to the wilderness, I’ve been on countess hikes and climbs with my family and have found a sense of freedom, independence, and physical and inner strength in myself as I have made challenging ascents and endured conditions that have tested my mettle. I have spent much of my free time in high school working with POST 84 Outdoor Education, teaching others the wonders of the wilderness has helped me to fall in love with the outdoors even more. Yet on various college tours, asking admission staff about their school’s outdoor program has been my most dreaded question because all too often the response is a disappointing “Well, I think there are…

Margaret Atwood’s novel Oryx and Crake follows the life of Jimmy/Snowman in a grim world of the not-so-distant future. The novel is a speculative look at the path Atwood believes our society is headed down. It features issues such as genetic engineering, global warming, food insecurity, and even child trafficking. A common element amongst these issues is that they are all dark and frightening topics. Despite this, Oryx and Crake still manages to have a multitude of hilarious moments. Some readers find these moments disruptive to the flow and seriousness of the novel, however other readers see the humour as complementary to the flow and tone; causing it to leave a deeper impact on the reader. The humour can be seen as complementary because it helps Jimmy deal with his situation, mirrors the differences between Jimmy and Crake,…

Outdoor education is a heavily debated subject with many facets and many opinions about each of those facets. Even the definition of “outdoor education” varies from person to person. I want to be a teacher for several different reasons. I initially decided teaching was for me when I was in middle school. I had an amazing teacher that helped me through a lot. She made a huge impact on my life, and I knew then that I wanted to be able to do the same for other kids. I later went on to have children of my own, which gave me even more reason to become a teacher. And even with the economy the way it is today, there are actually a lot of opportunities for teaching given the wide variety of jobs a teaching degree can obtain. I also understand the responsibility that comes with teaching and that the job doesn’t end when you leave the classroom. That is why I respect the teaching field as much as I do. I know I still have a long way to go before I get to my teaching career but I feel it will all be worth it when I get there.…
