What do you consider when you hear the words red, white, and blue? Do you naturally think about the flag of the United States of America? Our flag, as we probably see it today, is not the first flag with stars and stripes to be made. After the original thirteen colonies declared independence in 1776, Betsy Ross would sew the first U.S. Flag displaying the colors red, white and blue. The First Continental Congress on June 14, 1777, changed the shape of the stars from the circle pattern of the Ross design to the block shape we recognize today. Congress would give meaning to the colors of the flag in 1777. White would imply purity and innocence; red would be hardiness and valor; blue would become vigilance, perseverance…
The Washington Redskins are one of the NFL’s most dominant teams. Since 1971 they have won three Super Bowls championships and have had fourteen playoff appearances. The organizations past dates back almost 60 years and includes five overall world championships and also had the first NFL’s fight songs, marching band and radio network.…
Logos is the most commonly used rhetorical device by speakers, and Coach Boone is no exception to the rule. The two strongest speeches he gives to his players both exemplify the best way to use logos. In the first speech being analyzed, the coach is speaking to his players about working together and not being divided while on the field of the battle of Gettysburg. He tells them about how brother fought against brother, and the price they paid for what they did, how they destroyed each other. If they don’t shape up and learn how to be a team, they too will be destroyed. Lessons must be learned from history, and mistakes should not be repeated. Coach Boone understands this, and desperately wants his team to understand it as well.…
“The problem with Philadelphia fans is that they want you to play every game like it’s your last” (Swartz, Bryn). The Philadelphia Eagles franchise has many interesting facts about its past. At one time Philadelphia even represented the whole state of Pennsylvania for football. During many of the changes the team has experienced, the franchise has improved tremendously in its cultural aspect and the environmental relevance. Not only does this franchise have one of the most unique backgrounds but it also has a huge and dedicated fan base. The city of Philadelphia hasn't always been the home of the Eagles but it has definitely made the biggest contribution to the franchise.…
Daniel Snyder, the owner of the Washington Redskins, does not believe that the mascot is racist and will not agree to change the team’s mascot. He, and many other non-Native Americans, believe that the term “Redskin” is not offensive. They…
Some people think that in order for the NFL teams to be publicly owned fans would have to show equal support for every team. This make sense because a team like the Dallas Cowboys, who are already worth $4 billion, would sell more stocks than the Oakland Raiders , who are only worth $1 billion. The reason that is incorrect is that even the Oakland Raiders, making the lowest reneuve of any team, still makes more than enough money to support their franchise coming from their fans. The Raiders make 285 million dollars a year coming from fans in some way according to Forbes. That is a low income…
The Redskin name has been a problem for over 50 years, so this isn't a new problem. The term Redskin was first used in 1699 by the Europeans. They used this word to refer to the red pigment of their skin. The Europeans was the first to use this term the “Redskin”. Back then the Europeans would scalp the Redskins for fun. Then in the 1950's and 1960's the “Redskin” name was used as savage enemies in western films. This name does have a horrible history behind it. This controversy has been going on for over 50 years and no one has paid attention until now.…
However, rumors are also spreading that the Cowboys are also searching to enhance their defense and looks to be targeting one of the Miami Dolphin players. According to Sportsrageous, the Cowboys seems to be in dire need of an upgrade in their defense and…
In August of 1919 two men would unknowingly make history by organizing a small football team. This team would go on to become the Green Bay Packers, the most unique team in all of professional sports. One of the two men was Curly Lambeau who would eventually have the Packers Stadium named after him. Lambeau’s employer Indian Packing company, donated the jersey’s and allowed them to practice on their practice field so it was natural to call them the Packers which is still their name today.…
Football is the big game for many towns, but is it worth the risks? Kids should be able to play football because they can get scholarships and pay for college, they make the choice to play the game, and injuries occur in all sports so why just get rid of football.…
In the Native American Naming Tradition, a person could have several names during their lifetime. The title of this organization kind of says it all. We’re trying to give the United States of America back to the Native American Indian tribes. Not only have we been fighting for the true history of Pocahontas, America to be returned to its rightful founders, but we’ve also been trying to get Washington Redskins to change their name and mascot.…
The term “savages” is derogatory and has a negative history. I’m a little torn between whether or not the Washington Redskin’s should change their name. In the video attached to this assignment, Ray Halbritter, the CEO of United Nations Enterprises says, “When racial slur is being used to make profit by a national football team at this level it only does damage to the self-esteem and self-image of our youth.” However, I feel as though some Native Americans take this to the extreme by saying these mascots are causing suicide rates to increase with the youth on reservations. As a Native American, I have never had suicidal thoughts because of a mascot or an NFL team being referred to as the redskins. If Native Americans put as much effort into preventing violence, alcoholism and low poverty rates as they do about mascots and protesting pipelines, then maybe there wouldn’t be so many issues to worry about. We should make sure our own people have the educational opportunities to graduate from college, so they can get a good job and provide for their families. Let’s help our own people fight the battles going on inside our tribes before we start worrying about the Washington Redskins and whether or not they should change their…
The one thing all Pittsburgh people have in common is the fact they are all die hard sports fanatics. What better way to bring a community together, than by using the symbolic Pittsburgh area code, in the black and gold color way.…
In 2001, the band, which had remained unnamed, decided to play their first gig together in Chicago. It was at this show that the band got their well known name. Legend has it that the then front man of the band, Mike, asked the crowd what their name should be. After a couple of random names, a fan…
