The issue that many people fail to understand is that sexual orientation is not a choice. If you had to choose between a normal life or a living a life of ridicule, constant discrimination, unequal rights, fear of going out in public, family and friends shunning you, and religions literally preaching against you- which would you choose? Straight people don’t always understand how orientation isn’t a choice, because they’ve never gone through that awful realization that they might not be straight. Straight people don’t just think “Okay, I’m going to be straight.” It’s just that they’ve always known that they’re attracted to the opposite sex. Even in countries where gay marriage is legal, teachers can be refused a job for being gay. Gay students can be turned away. Gay men in Canada were just given the right to donate blood, but gay men in places like the Netherlands are denied the right to give blood.
