Explanatory Summary on Obama’s Second Inaugural Speech In “Obama’s Second Inaugural Speech”, from The New York Times on January 21, 2013, President Barack Obama gives out the speech for persuading the Congress, especially the republicans, and Americans to vote for him for becoming the next president in the election. In the speech, President Obama persuades that people should all get together in order to move forward, retaining the liberty and equality for everyone. This is a persuasive speech because President Obama gives out a lot of historical evidence, uses “we” and “our” repeatedly, and uses emotional appeal to catch audience’s attention. By using Thomas Jefferson’s words in “The Declaration of Independence”, saying “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are Life Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness” (1), President Obama asserts that a president has the responsibility to fastens the nation together by giving democracy in order to strengthen the constitution, providing better lives to people which is with liberty and happiness. Besides, President Obama also gives out a historical fact which is that “the patriots of 1776 did not fight to replace the tyranny of a king with the privileges of a few or the rule of a mob. They gave to us a Republic, a government of, and by, and for the people, entrusting each generation to keep safe our founding creed” (1), reminding American people that now they have democracy, but the only thing they have to do is to maintain the freedom, leading the nation to be a better country.
President Obama asserts that all Americans should change together for the new challenges in order to preserves people’s freedoms. He states that “For the American people can no more meet the demands of today’s world by acting alone than American soldiers could have met the forces of fascism or communism with muskets and militias.
