The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) and the Institute of Medicine (IOM) partnered up in attempt to improve the future of nursing and to meet the increasing demands being placed on the American health care system. Previous U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services Donna Shalala, chaired the committee and produced a report in 2010, The Future of Nursing: Leading Change, Advancing Health, which makes recommendations in the areas of training, education, and leadership for nurses, along with workforce policy .
