Exploring The Possibilities : A Journey To The New World

Have you ever wondered what the world would be like if the Spanish had not discovered America? If the answer is yes, let's explore some of hundreds of possibilities.
North America; a continent also known as the new world, bordered to the north by the Arctic Ocean, to the east by the Atlantic Ocean, to the west and south by the Pacific Ocean, and to the southeast by South America and the Caribbean Sea. Most of North America’s land area is now controled by Canada, The United States and Mexico but it has not always been that way.
As far as we know the first people to live in “North America” were the Paleoindians who start arriving during the last glacial period thanks to the Bering Land Bridge. They split in several groups around the area and became different cultures. The largest and most advanced civilizations were the Aztecs in what we now call Mexico and the Mayas in Central America.
European colonists began to arrive in the 16th century, but what would had happened with us if they had not? The first conclusion that comes to my mind is that we would be indians and speak our native languages. But that is not as likely since at that time France and England were as powerful as Spain. So if it was not Columbus the one to discover América in 1492, it surely would have been some british or french guy some years later.
If it had been England the country that discovered and conquered The Americas we would probably speak English instead of Spanish and our country’s economy would be probably better. On the other hand we have some other possible factors that are not as good, for example, Maybe all of our traditions and cultures would be forgotten by now, and we would not know anything about them, maybe Mexico and the United States would be a same huge country ruled or controlled by England.
But what if no one had ever found us? How would it be? Maybe we would be better, or maybe not, maybe our cultures would continue here and we would be ruled by emperors instead of a president, our clothes and traditions would also be different, our food and our religion, because there would be things we would not know, and people we would not know, like one of our independece heroes Miguel Hidalgo, of course our history would be completely different. Our country’s land area would be bigger because it would have never been sold.
Our economy is another important thing, we would have a better economy if the Spanish had not stolen our gold and exploded our sources. And of course Spain would have never been that powerful.

So now that we have some ideas of how our world would be like, we can create our own stories and maybe analyze what would have been better for us and for the world, or what would we prefer, would we have the same things and benefits? Or would we be the same people we are right now? Instead of our president Enrique Peña Nieto, would we have the Emperor Enrique Peña Nieto? Or maybe king? Would I be part of the royalty because of my last name? Well, we will never know that and so many other things.

Being that England was a country that did not fully partake in the competition for Western lands until over a century later, there were many resources at-hand for them to use as guides and as lessons to ensure a successful colonization process in the New World. For instance, maritime technology had been improved and without any of the advancements, European exploration could not have been possible in the first place. In addition to the technology, massive epidemics within North and South America during the Spanish conquest almost wiped out the entire Native American population that had lived there prior to European exploration. Therefore, English settlers had a much more successful relationship with their Native neighbors, making for an easier attempt to colonize in North American…

As you can see in the timeline above, it would be easy to assume that the Paleo-Indians had started out in the Northern Regions of modern day of America. Though, this is not the case, the really are estimated to started migrating north from Africa in as far back as 200,000 BCE. But, aside from that, you can see that from Northern Asia, they traveled eastward towards Northern America for a time period of about 15,000 years.…

If it weren’t for Christopher Columbus “discovering” the Americans, the would would probably be a different place. “Columbus set forth commanding three small ships, and after a long drawn-out journey landed on the coast of a Caribbean island. Thus commenced the Spanish conquest of America” (donquijote.org). It’s crazy to think that if he hadn’t set sail that…

By evaluating the human remains, artifacts, and some other archaeological evidence, the scientists have believed that the First Peoples arrived during the last Ice Age, or Pleistocene era , via the Bering Land Bridge. Based on geological evidence, similar fossils discovered on both continents prove that large grazing animals such as bison, caribou, horses, mammoths, and musk oxen migrated across this vast terrain for much of the last Ice Age, historians have believed that the First Peoples were big game hunters due to the size and shape of stone projectile points that have been found out, so it is possible that the hunter families followed these animals migrated across the plains, either on foot or on boat. Therefore, I agree with the idea that humans may have first entered Americas via a land route. It is the most commonly acknowledged theory and most plausible one.…

_Myths of the Spanish Conquest_ is broken into seven chapters, each dedicated to a different myth or mis-conception regarding the Spanish conquest. In debunking these myths, Matthew Restall works with three themes regarding the conquest. First, that the European discovery of the Americas was one of the greatest events in human history. Second, that the conquest was the achievement of "a few great men," which he subsequently describes as "a handful of adventurers." These two themes lead to a third theme, or question. "If history's greatest event - the European discovery and conquest of the Americas - was achieved by a mere "handful of adventurers," how did they do it?"…

Another nation that wanted to have control over North America was the French. The French owned land from Quebec all the way down to the end of the Mississippi River in New Orleans. They basically controlled “middle” America. The French were in the business of trapping and fur trade. A very profitable business, but not a very sustainable one on its own. The French never really had a chance to control the New World because they were not as powerful as the Spanish…

The countries that led most of the exploration of South and Central America were Spain and Portugal. They have introduced many changes to the new conquered territory. It all begins with the search for better access to new routes of trade with Asia. At the European explorations, countries like Spain and Portugal were the pioneers in the discovery and conquest of new lands. Portugal and Spain during their voyages accidentally came upon the western hemisphere; then soon started to exploit the new land such as their natural resources. Also the discovery of new lands was seen as the expansion of their monarchical powers. The discovery and conquest of new lands brought many changes to Europe and the colonized territory.…
