Children and young people’s development can be affected by a various range of External Factors. An External Factor is something that occurs outside which influences a child or young person and the way they develop. These can include things such as their background or family environment, if they are in poverty or deprivation, if they are a ‘looked after child’ meaning if they are a child of the care system and personal choices that the child or young person may make.

A child or young person’s background or family environment can affect their development as all children come from different backgrounds, cultures, circumstances and from families whose morals and values differ. The environment that a child grows up in and the morals/values
