Internal and External Expectations Essay

Tolle is saying not to fear death so much but rather the inadequate life. He is saying never fear what will come, depend on no one. Internal and external expectations shape our lives in many ways. In my essay, I will explain how internal and external expectations shape our lives by providing evidence from the book, "Whale Rider" and "The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-
Time Indian” and also how these expectations shape my life. In The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian, Junior experiences many internal and external expectations. To begin, Junior asks the teacher to use the bathroom. " What is it Arnold?", the teacher asked. " I have to go to the bathroom". "Hold it", "I can't" (Alexie
104). Only because Arnold is Indian, the teacher treats and with less respect, and ignores his needs. If the teacher had seen him as a good student with good grades, and a good family, the teacher would have probably treated him differently, which would have affected his self-esteem differently too. Secondly, Junior says, "And then I remembered there are a bunch of anorexics who are proud to be skinny and starved freaks"(Alexie 107). When junior first met Penelope, he thought she was the most beautiful girl in the world and that he had a chance to be with her. This was because he was excluded in ways that he couldn't change. An example of this is that, he was
Indian and he can't become white, another one is that, he is poor and it is most likely that he isn't going to become rich anytime soon. However, when he ran into
