External World By Nagel Summary
The concern Nagel is bringing up early in his book is the problem of the existence of an External World. The problem simply states that the world outside of our mind does not exist and we are living in a dream from which we cannot wake up. As humans we are innately curious and that I one of the reasons that we why question the existence of an External World, simply because we are inquisitive beings. However there is a deeper reasoning. We take a lot of concepts from granted in our world. All of our conversations about these concepts are only on the basis of representations. This becomes a problem because we are bound by our sense to create these representations. We need certain justification to use language about these concepts, and to achieve …show more content…
He is describing the lonely view of the Solipsist. A solipsist believes that their mind is the only thing that exists, that they are the only conscious being. Everything in the world would be a creation of their own mind and thus there would be no external world. This view can easily be broken down using the strategy of “Reductio ad absurdum” or to reduce to an absurdity. The solipsists make the clear distinction of appearances from reality. However if all the solipsist has are appearances created by his own mind then that is his reality. Thus the solipsist is trying to prove that is no external world or that his mind is the only one that exists with appearances. He is stuck in a circular argument and proved false. A milder form of this view is called skepticism. This is view that all you can truly know is your own experiences and impressions. There may be an external world, however there is no way to prove that this external world is one that is true to your impressions. It could be completely different yet you have no way of knowing because your cannot escape your own impressions. However the moderate skeptic believes there are other

Concepts are relationships that denote to phenomena that transpire in nature or in thought. “Concept analysis is an approach espoused by Walker and Avant (2011) to clarify the meanings of terms and to define terms (concepts) so that writers and readers share a common language” (McEwen & Wills, 2014, p. 58). Concept analysis should be directed when concepts require explanation or further growth.…

Solipsism states that the mind alone is the creator of an individual’s reality. From what I can understand from the reading Glaserfeld rejects solipsism since “in the case of concepts, theories, beliefs, and other more abstract structures, the facts a subject has found to be viable gain a higher degree of viability when successful predictions can be made by imputing the use of these facts to Others.” Glasersfeld (1989).…

Nagel believes that we are ridiculous creatures in the sense that we can’t prove without a doubt that our projects or goals are valuable. We can’t prove that our pursuits and goals have any value due to the existence of a gap that separates how we perceive a situation and the actual reality of the given situation. By noticing that we are absurd in this sense, we can approach our pursuits and goals with a more spirited attitude in that we think that our pursuits and goals are valuable in order to elude any conflicts with others about whether or not our pursuits have value. Another way to describe this approach would be the reality that everyone has differing values that they hold and the most likely case scenario that we won’t always agree with or support their values. An example of this approach would be an individual who pursues the project of going to Cubs games whenever possible. Say this person meets an individual who dislikes baseball who deems his project has no value due to the Cubs lack of playoff success (prior to this season, of course). That individual wouldn’t take offense or feel wronged by the other’s perception of…

It’s difficult to prove solipsism as it is to prove wrong, for example, one may present an in-depth argument arguing it can’t possibly be true. On the other hand, it is impossible to validate any experiences other than the individual validating their own and therefore impossible to prove that any life is actually alive and not just an entity. I don’t believe in solipsism, since many reasons and situations look like signs that show it cannot be true. From what I’ve read, it seems only one person in the…

Skepticism is the philosophical position that one should refrain from making truth claims, and avoid the statement of final truths. This is not necessarily quite the same as claiming that truth is impossible, but is often also used to cover the position that there is no such thing as certainty in human knowledge. In philosophy, it is an inquiry, a method of obtaining knowledge through systematic doubt and continual…

The authors also use the term “naive realism” to explain this process. Naive realism is the belief that we are truly objective and others who do not see things the same way as us are irrational and unreasonable. Since we believe we are objective, any evidence that suggests that we were mistaken and did not see things as they truly were cannot be true. We have to reduce the dissonance between our objectivity and our mistaken portrayal of something.…

Language organizes perception by using symbols. Language is a persuasive tool but can also be misleading and confusing. The most powerful ability of language is to understand and effectively communicate. For example, a prototype of a friend affects how a person judges a particular friend. By placing a person in the friend category, the category will most likely influence us on how we interpret the person and his and/or her communication. If we say something that might sound a little insulting, a friend might see it as teasing but a random person might see it as insulting. Even though that the words don’t change the meaning could be different; depending on how the perception of the words and person speaking. The…

Existentialism is a philosophy that I, personally, was unfamiliar with until we talked about it in class. The relationship between Grendel and existentialism was profound to me not only in the way that it drew lines of symmetry, but in the way that it helped me to interpret the concepts behind the philosophy.…

Creative group play has a lot of benefits over organized activites, due to children developing important skills for when they grow older. According to, " Experts in child development" children should have time for creative play to become good independent thinkers. Children also need to develop good critical thinking skills, which creative play can help to create. I also agree that creative play helps form multiple other different skill sets that you will use in your adult life, such as problem solving and social skills. Group play is also essential to learning "executive functioning skills", that organzied activites don't help with due to being to reliant on schedules, and heavy adult influence.…

In today’s global village, one cannot do without logistics. The subject encompasses all sectors of business activities and it is has become part of human existence. After my graduation from Nigerian Defence Academy, I was posted to the Nigerian Army Corps of Supply and Transport as a Supply Officer in 1993.The Corps of Supply and Transport, keeps reserve of petroleum products for the Nigerian Army and catered for all transport resources. As a young officer in a Supply Company, I was tasked to source for petroleum, oil and lubricant for the fleet of vehicles in 3 Armour Division, for operational and routine duties. I used to represent my Division in meetings with the Nigerian National Petroleum Company to ascertain our stock balance and requisitions. During the course of my duties, I realized that logistics drives the tactical plans of every military commander. It is so important that no military engagement can succeed without sound logistics. As a young officer then, I was always engaged in the logistics planning of Internal Security Operations in my Division’s area of responsibility. I used to supply petroleum, oil, lubricant and ration from the rear to the front after indents from the forwards lines. The ways the military supply chain works then always fascinate me a lot. I always derived joy seeing the troops properly fed and replenished for another day’s task. I have grown in rank to become a senior officer in the Nigerian Army and the desire to keep my troops replenished and to get the desire result in battle has been my motivation to study logistics in Postgraduate level.…
