Extreme Control And Restraint In 'Lather And Nothing Else'
Dwight Lyman Moody once said,"Character is what you are in the dark." In other words; someone's true nature is on the inside. This is true because often characters are forced to hide who they truly are. For example, in the short story "Lather and Nothing Else," Hernando Téllez uses the barber's inner thoughts, actions, and dedication to show that the barber hides who he truly is.

In the short story "Lather and Nothing Else," the barber must show extreme control and restraint in order to not reveal that the captain is his enemy. The barber is characterized as a secret rebellion member, but has a job to shave the enemy captain. He struggles to decide whether to kill the captain, or to let him live.     In the book, being a barber is the protagonist’s profession and desire. I can connect this to myself because I have a strong desire to play the piano 6 years ago, and I continue to do it today. While discussing what makes up one’s character Gladwell states that “character is more like a bundle of habits and tendencies and interests, loosely bound together” (Gladwell 160).
