First of all the concepts in this course were based on the guidelines of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Standards for k-8 instruction. The council encourages teachers to encourage students by having fun while being taught for example fractions. Another way the concepts learned in this course are relevant to the characteristic of a professional mathematics teacher is the No Child Left behind Act. This course showed us ways to help the struggling child catch up with the class without making the child feel bad about…

Algebra, some of us fear it while some of us embrace it, algebra is not “arithmetic with letters” it is better described as a way of thinking. At its most fundamental level, arithmetic and algebra are two different forms of thinking about numerical issues. Many of these examples have been taken from our classroom discussions while others are examples I have discovered in my own research for this paper, several examples of each will be cited.…

If school athletics were eliminated, we could help students avoid concussions and injuries that could play a great effect on their life. Concussions have nearly tripled in the last decade with middle and high school aged students (Report: Pressure on Teen Athletes Soars). This means that sports are becoming more and more intense and dangerous and playing negative effects on student’s lives. Playing sports comes with risk of very harmful injuries and limiting the sports played at school could make students much safer. Head injuries can take students out of the game for the rest of their lives, and make their lives different forever. Concussions are a big problem with sports today, but so is the amount of pressure put on these student athletes.…

One of the challenges faced by adolescents is the belief they are “not good at math”. This may be imparted by their parents belief they were not good at mathematics and do not ask more from their children. There needs to be a shift from this belief from all adults involved. They must recognize and affirm the importance of mathematical literacy for all. In the Ministry’s Numeracy Report (2004), students need the “ability to deal with the fundamental notions of number and change in order to make sense of mathematical information presented in everyday contexts” (Paulos, 1988, pg.). Mathematical literacy in important for both employment and post-secondary admissions. Therefore, as teachers, we need to take advantage of the abundant opportunities for fostering mathematical literacy across the curriculum. As with Ms. Hastings, has a strong belief in the “Growth Mindset” by setting high expectations and showing student they can learn as opposed to the belief of “either you are good at math or…

In this paper we are going to look at a problem that can be seen in the “Projects” section on page 620 of the Math in our World text. The problem discusses Pythagorean triples and asks if you can find more Pythagorean triples than the two that are listed which are (3,4, and 5) and (5,12, and 13) (Bluman, 2012). The Pythagorean theorem states that for any right triangle, the sum of the squares of the length of the sides of the triangle is equal to the square of the length of the side opposite of the right angle (hypotenuse) and can be shown as a² + b² = c² (Bluman, 2012). We will be using a formula to find five more Pythagorean Triples and then verify each of them in the Pythagorean Theorem equation.…

My keenness oninterest in math started from my childhood, where I found those abstract numbers and formulas never boring to me; instead, I found them much like a piece of amazing music, by with which I’m I became deeply enchanted. My talent on for math had aroused attention from my parents and teachers, who in the following years provided me as many opportunities as possible to allow me diggingdig deeply in mathematics by through decent training, bookwavingbook waving discussions and numerous contests. I often involve myself in the discussions and debates at the portals of www.mathlinks.ro portal and the Act of Problem Solving, where I met many enthusiasts and lovers of math from all over the world and with the common interests in math we became close friends. Little Gauss from South Korea, Silouan from Greece and Pohoatza from Romania often helped me to clear out the misunderstandings in about planes in geometry while I shared my good solutions to the inequalities with my insights in algebra. Because of the time difference, some of us needed stay up very late in order to join the real-time discussions, but none of us cringed. Each time when someone began a topic or sent a message through the portals, the rest of the participants would respond actively and contribute their enlightening ideas or unique methods so that all the puzzlements and bewilderments soon vanished into thin air.…

I and the other members aimed for a greater involvement of students in Math activities by conducting fun and creative contests for the whole student community. It was one of the most fulfilling opportunities that I have been given. When I got in at the University of the Philippines- Diliman (UPD) in 2013, I continued getting involved in helping others while being an active student at the same time. I joined ASAPhil-UP— Architectural Students’ Association of the Philippines— an academic organization of the UPD- College of Architecture, to do this. I worked under the Academics Committee of the organization that is responsible for educational activities such as design competitions, lectures, and other related events. Working for the organization even just for a year was full of new experiences and gained…

Srinivasa Ramanujan (1887-1920) introduced to the mathematical world. Born in South India, Ramanujan was a promising student, winning academic prizes in high school. But at age 16 his life took a decisive turn after he obtained a book titled A Synopsis of Elementary Results in Pure and Applied Mathematics. The book was simply a compilation of thousands of mathematical results, most set down with little or no indication of proof. It was in no sense a mathematical classic; rather, it was written as an aid to coaching English mathematics students facing the notoriously difficult [Tripos examination, which involved a great deal of wholesale memorization.] But in Ramanujan it inspired a burst of feverish mathematical activity, as he worked through the book's results and beyond. Unfortunately, his total immersion in mathematics was disastrous for Ramanujan's academic career: ignoring all his other subjects, he repeatedly failed his college exams.…
