Did you know that based on a poll conducted in the U.S in 2011 one million children were harassed, threatened, or experienced any other forms of cyber bullying in the past year. You might want to ask yourself, have you ever bullied someone online whether it was intentional or not? Researchers say that social networks online can bring out your negative side. Some people say Facebook makes it easier to be mean to people because sometimes you don’t see the impact of what you write. I do agree that Facebook and other social networks can make people mean and hurtful because they are behind a computer screen and not face to face.
If you are interacting with people on the internet and not face to face, people might take what you say in a different way than how you meant it. We communicate with our emotions and tone of voice; if you are online people might view what you say negatively. You might post a comment you think is funny, but you don’t know how it could affect other people. Another reason is some kids don’t think before they post which can lead to bigger problems like Anna’s. Everyone should learn how to act more sensitively online. We should all be kinder to eachother on and offline. Lastly, people can impersonate other people using Facebook. They can use Facebook and live off a lie about who they actually are. They can act very nice on Facebook but in real life be very different and vice versa. Some people would disagree that Facebook can be a beneficial thing to society. Facebook can let you communicate with friends and family you don’t see as often, let you make new friends, and get to know each other better. Though Facebook can be beneficial, it has a lot of non beneficial aspects. Kids think that since you’re behind a computer screen you can say and post anything you want. If everyone online would think before they leave harsh comments and mean posts, Facebook would be a much better place to meet new friends and share your life. The next time you log into Facebook and make a post, think about how others might feel.

The second negative thing about facebook is not privacy. One day, my sister I see she is uploading photos to facebook of her birthday and said to me, “Es de mi cumpleanos son para mis amigas para que las vean por si no fueron”, and my mom said to her, “Niña no estes subiendo fotos aunque sea de tus cumpleaños”, because those pages there are many people who do not know as stalkers or pedophiles, because you never know who is watching or sometimes put personal information in facebook and this is not correct because never know who use this information for kidnap or other things.…

One reason Facebook is making kids meaner is because online communication can bring out hostile behavior. In the text, the author says, “Devon, 13, says that not long ago, a friend lashed out at her in a Facebook post.” Kids and adults say things online that are much different from what they would say face-to-face. Also, in the text, Devon said, “ I guess because I wasn’t right there, he just let it all out.” People have the nerve to say things that are mean online because they aren’t looking at the person face-to-face.…

The biggest issue with Facebook is the fact that people feel entitled to comment about everything. Most comments I have seen are not hateful in nature—most comments are “status updates” about your laundry list and other insignificant things, but all this freedom to express EVERY SINGLE idea leads to some really negative conversations and comments as well. The statistics from I-Safe found in the article “Is Facebook Manking You Mean?” states that 58% of kids say someone has been mean or hurtful to them online, and 53% of kids say they’ve been mean or hurtful to another person online. These statistics prove that over half of people online have cruel intentions or are more likely to express their negativity online. These shocking statistics tell me that we all need to be more selective about…

Facebook as a social network is equally valued and criticized. It’s true that no company other than Facebook has connected us together the way that we have been connected in the past decade but many criticize the social network it actually isolates people rather than brings them together. Many teenagers love social media because of its wide connectivity and function that people can receive it for free; it does not require money to make an account and use it. Facebook is the most visible among various social media. What’s impressive about this site is that you can easily connect with your long lost friends and see how they’re doing, or vice versa. You can also make new friends in Facebook. Though this could get addictive and may divert our attention away from the real world. Like what Cornell University’s Steven Strogatz said; “Social media sites can make it more difficult for us to distinguish between meaningful relationships we foster in the real world, and the numerous casual relationships formed through social media.” I strongly agree with this statement. Also, people become a whole new person, because it’s the Internet. People can be anything or anyone in the Internet.…

A negative effect of Facebook is that it can lead to stalkers. Truth is, there are stalkers everywhere, but Facebook users put all of their business on the site, which makes them very vulnerable. The users can choose what other people see, but stalkers are very smart and can find ways around those walls. Stalkers can make fake profiles and appeal to the person they are trying to befriend, just to become their friend. Once they become friends, then the real stalking begins. The stalker will then begin watching their every move. The stalker can see anything that the user posts and can send messages or even instant messages. For example, imagine a stalker befriending a 13-year-old girl on Facebook. The minute she accepted his friend request, he told her that he works for a modeling agency and he is scouting new talent, and she definitely has that talent. The stalker asked her for some photos and she sent a couple, but that was not enough. The stalker then asked her for some more, but this time he asked for some half-nude pictures. The teenager was then suspicious, so she told her mother. The mother then called the cops, and they told her that the information she gave them fits the description of a stalker that has been terrorizing teenage girls in the area. The cops then asked the mother to pretend to be the teenager just long enough to catch the stalker. The mother agreed and the plan worked; the cops caught the stalker and put him behind bars for a…

The first aspect is that Facebook fulfilled our Internet lives. Do you still remember what did you usually do on the Internet before the Facebook was invented? Use my own experience for example; before the Facebook was invented, I only use the basic functions of the Internet, such as check the emails, look for some news on the Internet, sometime I also play some online games. At that time, I prefer to watch TV rather than surf the Internet. However, after the Facebook was invented, my online life changed. When I surf the Internet, the first thing I have to do is check my Facebook, because many of my friends who changed their states everyday. From their states I can know what happened to my friends. Sometimes I can also share some interesting videos and pictures to my friends, it also made me feel closer with my friend. Actually, not only myself, but also other teenagers have the similar situations. In “Facebook is a major influence on girls, says survey”, Sean Coughlan (2010) reported that there is a survey based on 3000 parents and 1000 children in the UK, and they found that Facebook made a big influence on children, especially on girls. In that survey, children are asked to list three important things in their life. The result shows that 41% of the girls and 17% of the boys believe that technology is one of the biggest influences, and…

Facebook has become a place where everyone wants to be nowadays. Not only is it wrong to be on there every single day, it is also unhealthy, which is why Facebook should be banned. People no longer care about going out and making friends. Instead, they rather stay inside and become friends with people they do not even know on Facebook. These kinds of actions can be really dangerous. People can easily create Facebook accounts, meaning that it is also easy to portray someone they’re not. No one ever knows who really is sitting behind that computer screen. Especially young people, they can be ignorant at times thinking they know their friends good enough to give them their information. Most people are unaware of how easy it is for a stranger to collect all of their information. Another bad thing about Facebook is all the drama it can cause between friends, families, or any kind of relationship. It is sad how arguments are posted for the whole world to see. Teenagers every so often lie about their age just so they do not have to ask for their parent’s approval. This in most cases happens because teenagers are doing things they’re not suppose to. In addition, people sometimes tend to hide their identities on purpose to do unpleasant things such as stalking, and bullying. There are also sick people who create fake Facebook accounts to harass little kids. Facebook is not good anymore. Many people are taking advantage of it and it is better for it to be shut down for good. No one needs Facebook, anyone can survive without it. It is healthier to be out there living life than sitting behind a computer talking about it. It would certainly make a change if Facebook were banned…

The first negative effect that Facebook can have on our lives is undesirable information about us can spill beyond the boundaries of chosen privacy settings and ended up in the hands of a third party. Whatever we choose to post online can never be entirely private. If too much information is exposed, someone may find out where we live and it is especially dangerous for girls. Moreover, young people need to be careful when they think they are just chatting with friends because others may read what we write. Facebook does have privacy features, they should be used to prevent identity thief. To our students using Facebook, there is a false sense of privacy. We need to show them examples of the serious consequences that have occurred to those whose egregious online behaviour has been made public. Students have been expelled from high schools and colleges. Students have been denied acceptances to intern programs, admission to independent high schools, colleges, and jobs at summer camps. Students and their families, have been sued for slander and defamation of character. Students and their parents, have been arrested. These consequences are all because of the content they have posted in their "private" social network accounts. People are trolling their accounts yet they did not realise. The people could be hackers, scammers, reporters, police, high school and college admissions officers, employers, parents and others.…

Facebook was originally made so people could strengthen their relationships by communicating with their friends even if they were far away. Recently, studies have shown that people with low self-esteem have been updating negative statuses, leaving awful comments on their friend’s pictures, and writing terrible things on their walls for everyone to see. People with low self-esteem are more likely to like Facebook because it gives them the opportunity to confront someone without coming face to face with them. They would rather say the rudest things to them on Facebook rather than in person. People with a high self-esteem who post positive things on Facebook are liked better than people who post negative things. People write their negative comments on Facebook because when they say it out loud, they can tell that other people get tired of hearing it. When you use Facebook, you don’t usually see their reactions.…

Butler 1 Intellectual Growth and Inquiry 14 March 2011 Facebook: From Whiteboard to World The evolution of the Internet over the past twenty years has changed the way we communicate with others across the world. However, it was not until the late 1990s that the Internet really hit a growth spurt. With such concepts as email and online advertising catching on, the Internet began to expand quickly. Shortly after this rapid growth, MySpace was created and was one of the first websites under the category of social network. With it becoming instantly popular among young users and musicians, it seemed as though MySpace would just be another online meeting point for younger generations; yet at the same time, another of its kind was being created in a Harvard University dorm room that would redefine social networking and, eventually, the internet. Birth of a Nation On a whiteboard in 2003, Harvard sophomore Mark Zuckerberg began conceptualizing a new social network. Zuckerberg was a computer science major and already had previous success with computer engineering. During his senior year of high school at Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire, Zuckerberg and a classmate co-wrote Synapse, a music recommendation program (Grossman, “Person of The Year 2010: Mark Zuckerberg). The program had caught the attention of Microsoft and AOL, both of whom unsuccessfully made attempts to buy it for around one million dollars (Grossman, “Person of The Year 2010: Mark Zuckerberg).…
