CHAPTER I

THE PROBLEM AND ITS SCOPE

Introduction
Marine radars provides bearing and distance of ships and land targets in vicinity from own ship (radar scanner) for collision avoidance and navigation at sea. Radar is a vital component for safety at sea and near the shore. Captains need to be able to maneuver theirs ships within feet in the worst of conditions and to be able to navigate "blind". This means inside a dark room with no visibility they need to safely navigate their way through waters in the worst of weather.
The integration of these devices is very important as it becomes quite distracting to look at several different screens. Therefore, displays can often overlay charting, radar, sonar into a single system. This gives the captain unprecedented instrumentation to maneuver the ship. With digital backbones, these devices have advanced greatly in the last years. For example, the newer ones have 3D displays that allow you to see above, below and all around the ship, including overlays of satellite imaging.
Not having the correct electronics can lead to serious mishaps, including collisions with other vessels, running around, running out of fuel and getting lost. It is very difficult to navigate waterways without navigation equipment and I t is easy for a captain to get lost. You should have the correct equipment based on the size of your boat.

Where would we be in deep sea exploration without technology? Soon I will answer that question, but for now let's see where we are. The Aqualung is a device that started the line of deep sea equipment. Next was the Jim Suit. For this reason, the Deepsea Challenger. The Aqualung, Jim Suit, and Deepsea Challenger are all portions of technology that have contributed to deep sea exploration.…

Radar was used a lot back in modern wars, mostly on ships for purposes like to avoid ship collision and to be able to find where the other boat and any other miscellaneous objects where and to either a. have the element of surprise or b. to avoid. Radar can also be used in the air, fighting while in flight can be even more dangerous than fighting by land or by the sea, but with the use of radar, planes can use antennas to detect other enemy airplanes, they might also have them in modern day airports to help the pilot find the landing strip while in the air, the radar will send transmitted information to the pilot that will help them prepare to land.…

The way that a radar works is a transmitter will send pulses out and then waves or echoes will be transmitted back on to a screen to show if and where an object is in relation to the radar. The reason why the computer is able to know how far away an object is; is by measuring how long it takes for radar waves to come back to transmitter. This method is useful to both the military and the meteorologist. The military is able to benefit from it because they can see their opponents before it’s too late. The meteorologist benefit in the fact that they are able to advise the local community of when to be prepared for any kind of rain or bad weather that may be heading their way such as tornados.…

It was one of those overnight kayak trips you throw together on a whim: clean the campstove, stuff the drybags into the car and pick up some canned goods at the local store after ducking down into the basement to retrieve the headlamps and the VHF radio. It was that time of year when Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts is prone to fog, and we wanted the VHF in case we needed to make, among other calls, a securite call on channel 16. Our route included a lengthy open water crossing, and we wanted the radio for both general communications and in case we needed to make a general hail that would help prevent us from getting run down by a power boat. Our compass course, 170 degrees magnetic from Horseneck Point, Westport to Cuttyhunk Island, the southernmost island of the Elizabeth Island archipelago that lies off Woods Hole, Ma. [black sea bass LINK], would bring us take us across the shipping lanes which slides on down past the Elizabeth Islands before vectoring straight for the entrance to the Cape Cod Canal and Cape Cod Bay [Billingsgate LINK]. Sure, my cousin, who was kayaking with me, had spent time in the merchant marine, but that was no reason for us to get run down by one of his former shipmates should we cross the shipping lane in visibility reduced by haze, fog, or rain. Thus the vhf radio, and our possible securite call. Here's how we'd make the securite call if…

A Doppler radar is an important tool used to measure the velocity and direction of a moving object. The Radar actually has transmitters that produce and release electromagnetic waves in the form of microwaves or radio waves. These waves are sent out and when they reach something they reflect or bounce back to the source or transmitter. It is noticed that when the waves are reflected back they are much weaker but the machines are able to amplify them to get an accurate reading from them. This process determines and measures the distance of the object its reading.…

Looking at these two comparisons is very interesting. As a Maritime Historian an understanding of past technology is important in determining a time frame of an incident. Plus, an understanding of how to use todays’ technology to assist in finding and recording of the past is an absolute necessity. Computers hold the key to major research projects by way of technology, Internet, and E-Mail. As a Maritime Explorer advances in technology will continue to be used to find, track and understand the water world around us.…

Since Titanic radioed to some ships, one didn't have its radio on, so it made them aware that ships must have their radio on all times. Ships must always have their radios on, because if they don't a ship could sink. Then they would not be able to help. It will help ships be detected at all times. This will help, because the ocean is very large. That way multiple ships can get the radio call if a ship is sinking. Since ships did not have their radios on, it really affected history.
