There are many ways in which nationalism can be shaped by the people of a country. Some factors include social, economic, political, geographical and historical aspects. These things give the inhabitants of a country realistic events and values to base their nationalities on. Many events in the French Revolution, Napoleonic Era of rule in France, and the Independence of Kosovo will be used in the explanation of this development of nationalism.
Historical factors are one of the most important factors in determining a sense of nationalism for a country. Often people will use the history of their country as the backbone of their values and culture. For example, in the French Revolution, the Storming of the Bastille signaled the beginning of the Revolution and is looked upon by people today as one of the first collective efforts of change in France’s history. The inhabitants of Paris decided that they had had enough with the King’s reign and took control of the Bastille, killing everyone inside and tearing it apart. This began the violent aspect of the French Revolution as it was one of the biggest and most defiant acts towards the current government in its time. Another prime example of a historic event that the French can attribute to their nationality today would be when Napoleon Bonaparte conquered most all of Europe. They view him as a sense of pride, and to show that they are not to be underestimated as a nation. After many years of rule some of his system fell apart at his loss in the Battle of Waterloo, but to this day his earlier battles were some of the most formidable in history. And finally, the Declaration of Independence in Kosovo shows some historic significance in their nationality today. After years of grief in the process of trying to form a country, Kosovars prevailed and can claim their victory as a significant part of their nationality.
