The Researcher
ABSTRACT
It would appear that very little research has been conducted to established what attitudinal differences exists students engaged in the study of English in a foreign language context. Many students begin studying English with eager anticipation, however due to the structure of English classes and the emphasis placed on a grammatical understanding of the language, many students soon lose interest. It means that the students are demanded to be able to use English to fulfill their daily need such as for reading the newspaper and communicating both spoken and written for solving their life problem. In other word, the purpose of English is to reach communication target. It refers to discourse competence including comprehension and production competence both of written and spoken text realized into language skills then and it will be used to response and produce the discourse in the society.
In connection with Philippine Englishes, this research aims to recognize the Attitudes of High School Students in Maryhill College toward the Use of English Language. Another purpose of this study is to answer some question. First, How well do the students use English in their day to day conversations? Second, What are the factors that influence their attitude toward English Language? Third, What are the reasons why students do not support the English Campaign?
In our country, innumerable learners commit errors on how they make use their terms in forming sentences because of the deficiency of apprehension on the background of the tongue that they are utilizing. This study will help in aiding these novices in gaining knowledge on the different histories of the vocabulary that they are applying in their dogma. The students will be benefited for learning facts about vocabularies. The teachers of the youth will also be benefited for this research may contain vital information that they may make use of or share with their pupils.
The descriptive method of research was utilized in the study. The research instrument used to collect data was the questionnaire. This was employed because it gathered data faster than any other method. It is also the most adequate method for the study. Pure random sampling was utilized in determining the respondents.
Based on the findings, all of the students were familiar with the Philippine vocabulary and English vocabulary but the majority of them the student were not use their English in there day to day conversations. It is better to use influence there attitude toward English Language. The students did not support the English Vocabulary. The researcher recommended the students to become aware of the different vocabularies used in daily life and to have the initiative in learning new knowledge on vocabularies in order to become aware. For the parents, the researcher recommended that they should support their children in their process on being aware with the Standard Philippine English vocabulary and explain to their children the importance of having knowledge on the Philippine English vocabulary. For the teachers, they should satisfy the hunger of the students on the knowledge of vocabularies and have effective teaching methods in order for the students not to become bored in learning vocabularies.
