Facts and Figures Essay

They say that the children are the future. Is this statement true? Yes, it is. Todays’ children can either be future leaders of tomorrow, or present criminals of today. An at-risk youth is a youth who is extremely vulnerable to the negative consequences of school failure, substance abuse, and early sexuality. Some may ask the question: How does a young person get to that point? It starts in the home. Most youths grow up in single parent homes where the stats largely show having no father figure present. This being so, this can have a negative impact on a young person. Young people need that structure, they need that stability of knowing that a daughter can look up to her father, and a son can be taught to be an honest man. Nowadays, young girls are being preyed on by older men, and young boys are taking on television lifestyles. There are few positive role models today for young people to look up to. We as adults need to show and teach these young people the values of life. We have to let them know that instead of aiming to be a hip hop star, they should aim to be a doctor, or another prominent position in life where a young person can prosper. I’m not trying to take anything away from the hip hop artists of the world, but a lot of the spoken words that come out of these artists mouths are either fictitious, or negative. Some artists glorify the world of drug dealing and violence not knowing or realizing that young people are taking what they say to heart. They are picking up guns instead of books, and it’s sad because I, myself see the potential in so many of the younger generation heading down the wrong road. When I look at television news, it’s either seeing youths getting murdered by other youths, or youths getting put in jail. The other day I dropped my fourteen year old daughter off at school and saw at least four young girls of the same age pregnant. It seems that todays’ youth are headed down the path of destruction. So what can we do to change this? What can we do to save the youth of today? Having both parents actively present, loving, and supporting their children is a start. I am so blessed that my nine year old has his father in his life to be a positive role model and to teach him how to grow into becoming an honest and hard-working man. We strive to teach both our children how to love and respect themselves as well as respecting others. But what about the other children? The ones with no father figures out there to teach them and protect them? What happens to them? I guess we’ll just have to wait and see, and pray that they don’t fall, but RISE!

Have you ever wondered if letting children listen to whatever music they wanted to would ever have a bad influence on them? Parents today try and control what their kids listen to, but they sometimes end up failing. With the this being true in some cases, it can be a cause for concern. The problem that most parents actually have with these types of harmful music is that it changes the way their children act and speak towards…

In the Homeric Epic, women are cast into one of two dichotomous roles: that of the wise and faithful or that of the foolish and disloyal. However in Atwood’s The Penelopiad these roles are deconstructed such that they become fluid as opposed to concrete—such that the women do not wholly occupy one role or the other but rather move on a balance beam between the two, sometimes leaning nearer to one lateral or the other but never resting on the end points of either side. In the unfettered world of The Penelopiad, woman are granted the voices that they are denied in The Odyssey; they are free to weave their own epic stories of cunning, captivity, danger, victory, and failure. The Penelopiad therefore gives rise to a “new” woman who is not bound by Homeric conventions that confine reader to a singular understanding of The Odyssey and its characters; rather Atwood unveils a myriad of possibilities, explanations, and motivations behind the events of The Odyssey as they are imagined by Homer. Our minds are opened to realities and potentials either unconsidered, or considered but immediately abandoned for lack of emphasis, by the readers. We are made to ponder what seem to be obscurities and minor inconsistencies in The Odyssey that upon deeper exploration and analysis serve to completely revolutionize the conventional reading of The Odyssey in terms of the female characters. Atwood accomplishes this impressive feat by exploring the “dark alleyways” that lead us to alternate, but plausible, conclusions as evidenced by the expressions of the muted cast of The Odyssey—Penelope and the twelve hanged maids.…

Dr. Boyce Watkins debates with Michael Eric Dyson on whether or not hip hop artists should be held accountable for their words. Both off these men already know, all of the artist should be held accountable, however if we can put the artist to task to stop making that kind of idiotic music, will we have the power to stop that machine that has rob us blind but still put out recording artists slaves that get plenty but they are selfish and it good and bad to an extent? Dr. Watkins points out, that the fact of us and others being bombarded with these negative images of the young Black Male in the mass media, appears to be taking a heavy toll in terms of the self-image of far too many young Black people and in the way these young people are perceived in the minds of the…

Hip Hop as a musical genre has gone through much change not only in the content of the music, but the message conveyed and how many would say it has in some ways defined black culture in the last 20 years. A significant amount of hip hop music nowadays is geared towards painting this unrealistic image of hyper-materialism, sexism, and violence that ultimately assists in dragging black culture down, and the people as a whole. You look at hip hop artists like 50 Cent and Lil Wayne who is reinforcing this thuggish persona, making music revolved around money and drugs and it paints a bleak picture for young blacks. These young impressionable youth view this way of life as the “norm”, and the ghetto pathology seen as an authentic part of black culture, even though it does nothing more than demean a multitude of black people.…

The article “Red Flags Before Santa Monica Shooting, But Pointing Fingers is Hard”, by Gloria Goodale states the need to raise awareness in schools, workplaces, and families and teach people to identify red-flag behaviors. Such signs can include a change in behavior, an interest in violent weapons, strange writing, feeling hopeless and the desire to hurt someone. People can be trained recognized behavior before incidents happen, but there are challenges, because it could discriminate against people with mental health problems. The article “Colleges Are Watching Troubled Students”, by Jeffrey McMurray, mentions how many colleges and universities began monitoring and sharing information about troubled students after the Virginia Tech shootings, to prevent crime and violence on school campuses. School officials created a “watch list” of troubled students and decided whether they needed professional help or if they should just kick them out of school. Both articles are similar because if “red flag” behaviors were spotted early on it could prevent those students from harming themselves and others.…

“The debasement of our culture, of which gangsta rap is a big part, has coarsened children in general and put high-risk kids in a dangerous place.Taking drugs, carrying guns, and disrespecting human beings is now not only socially acceptable in many situations, it is downright glamorous”(O’Reilly). This shows how we as a society can reduce one aspect of violence in a violent society and expect real results. Youth violence will not be seriously reduced without violence in other aspects of our culture being addressed. In the same vein, modifying media violence alone will not have much effect but to ignore it will make efforts on other fronts less successful. Despite the fact that the media have limited independent effects on youth violence, we need to expand the focus on them.…
