Misplaced priorities hack Kolkata's green cover to an all-time low
Prithvijit Mitra, TNN Feb 18, 2013, 01.58AM IST

KOLKATA: The government may be working on a war footing to beautify the dividers and pavements by planting decorative shrubs, but it seems the big bosses are missing the bigger picture. For, lacks of planning and ruthless chopping of trees have forced the city's green cover to dwindle at an abysmal 5.5%, down from 8% in 2009. It's high time the government realizes that planting saplings on pavements and boulevards won't help to arrest this free fall.
Kolkata's green cover has never been less, as per a study carried out by the Centre for Environment and Development, an NGO that had put the cover at around 10% in 2007. According to experts, the beautification drive planned by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) - that includes plants on road dividers and inclined platforms on pavements - won't help to reduce the city's pollution load, one of the major objectives of any green drive. The move should have been preceded by a compensatory plantation to off-set the loss of more than 1,500 trees that were chopped over the last two years to make way for the East-West Metro and several flyover projects, they felt. http://articles.timesofindia.indiatimes.com/2011-06-05/kolkata/29623147_1_vivekananda-park-green-activists-mmic Activists call for more green cover

KOLKATA: Kolkata, which once was crowned as the city of parks, has been struggling to expand its green cover for a while now. While a metropolitan needs at least 15 per cent open space (parks, gardens), Kolkata has only 5 per cent of it at present. On the eve of World Environment Day, the city's green activists on Saturday demanded a wider blanket of green for Kolkata and better maintenance of its parks.

In addition, some human activities along routeways can affect the types of plant species that can be found there. For example, the spreading of salt/grit on roads in icy conditions can lead to halophiles (salt-loving plants) inhabiting the area, and as many grass verges are regularly maintained by weeding/mowing, natural succession can sometimes be restricted due to the fact that plant species are not allowed to grow naturally and can sometimes be managed by the use of chemical pesticides, possibly resulting in a plagioclimax. Furthermore, afforestation by groups such as the highways agency (who have planted over 1.8 billion trees in order to soften noise and make routeways aesthetically pleasing) can introduce new species of…

There is widespread literature arguing that the millennial generation is more self-promoting and egotistical as a population than the previous generations. Dr. Jean M. Twenge has drawn significant media attention to this presumed shift in psychology with two books, Generation Me released in 2006 and The Narcissism Epidemic: Living in the Age of Entitlement in 2009; the former sold over 100,000 copies. Both books compile surveys from around 1950 to present on personality traits regarding self-esteem, assertion, and narcissism. Upon analysis, the book highlights statistics that pose the millennial generation as being significantly more narcissistic (about 30% more) than college students in the 1950’s to 1970’s. This has sparked a slew of media debate regarding the cause for the personality shift Dr. Twenge has presented to society. Consequently, there have also been several discussions and academic research on the recent outbreak of social media networks being correlated with this alteration in psychology. The synthesis of these two media phenomena has led to an argument for the medicalization of millennial generational psychopathologies caused by social media networks.…

Thimphu is not green either. May be a few roofs (I still remember the TCC's absurd regulation to paint the roofs green). Too few green spaces for people to enjoy. Neither a single energy efficient building (the BTF building in Taba may qualify as one) nor any efforts in this direction. The intra-city transportation system is still unattractive to many people. Too many gas-guzzlers. Proposal for electric trains and trams - I think we need more immediate, effective and simpler solutions.…

Real estate objects near parks and other green zones are often more expensive compared to alternatives in industrial zones. These pricing differences highlight the importance of the nature’s role in the urban environment. While it is almost impossible to preserve it in conditions of a big city, there are different opportunities for adaptation of the nature to the metropolis. Such landscape projects “can make cities significantly more meaningful, valuable, and liveable” (Girot). But the author highlights the creation of such landscapes is impossible without an appropriate support. In the case of China and other countries the appearance of functional green zones was able with the aid of politicians and other…

Sadly, we can mourn the slow death of every city of Pakistan from Karachi to Peshawar. Rapacious politicians, bureaucrats, mafias, gangs, encroachers and greedy developers have destroyed our cities by turning the law on its head. In this piece, I just confine to mourning the slow death of the capital, Islamabad. Any nation would have been very proud of the natural endowment of Islamabad — green hills, natural streams, good quality of soil and the variety of trees and flowers that one can grow. Had this city been in a better-governed state and a more civilised society, we would have seen cafes, parks, bicycle tracks, walking and jogging trails and…

The debate over sustainability is prompting the society to rethink what changes that can be made to attain a more sustainable future. The Urban Planner need to balance the need of planning to preserve resources for the future generation with other land use needs. Thus, to realise their aim of providing for sustainable urban living, the role of Urban Planners is to create built environment that will encourage walkability and reduce car dependency, to optimise land use by raising densities and alleviate urban sprawl, to balance the need to preserve more public open spaces against other competing land use needs so that there is enough social and community infrastructure to promote active, healthy lifestyle; and the development of communities within a sustainable urban fabric.…
