think about their surroundings because of this. Fahrenheit 451 should be included in the curriculum because it shows how technology gets in the way of us interacting with one another.
For instance Montag and Mildred don't always have a good relationship because they are too busy for each other. Mildred is always watching TV, and Montag is busy with his job. At one point in the book, Fahrenheit 451, Montag thinks he wouldn’t be sad if Mildred ever died. “And he remembered thinking then that if she ever died, he wouldn’t cry. For it would be the dying of the unknown, a street face, a newspaper image, …” (Bradbury, 44) dem pronoun This is because Montag and Mildred never really spent time together in the book. Couples today don't have real relationships because they don't spend enough time together or are always on their
phones. Technology is one reason why people don't interact with each other as well as they used to. Fahrenheit 451 has good examples of this so it should be in the school curriculum. One of the main themes of the book is censorship because of the idea that everyone is offended by something in books. For example, if someone wrote about how LGBTQ rights are bad, then someone who believes differently might want to ban the book because it doesn't fit their beliefs or they don't want kids to learn about it. And vice versa. The concept of the marketplace of ideas necessitates the exploration of both sides of an issue. Only then can an intelligent decision be make. Also, Beatty, the Captain of the Firemen, stated that their society burned books in order to make everyone feel equal. “‘Surely you remember the boy in your own school class who was exceptionally ‘bright,’... And wasn't it this bright boy you selected for beatings and tortures after hours?’” (Bradbury, 58) This happens today where smart kids don't answer because they feel uncool or they feel as though they might get picked on. The last reason this book shows censorship is because people were so engrossed in technology, that they stopped reading books at all, So it was easier for the government to stop making them. Technology has also made people not care about the violence happening in other parts of the world, because they are too busy watching TV. In Fahrenheit 451, it seems like people could care less that there are bomb jets flying around. In comparison, in today’s world, for example, the Charlottesville Riot injured and even killed some innocent people, but others are too busy scrolling through social media to notice. So without a doubt the school should include Fahrenheit 451 in the school curriculum.
