do I regret it. Pushing the thought away I walked into the study and poured me a glass to drink. Then just like every day since that night, I couldn’t stop. “For the love of God, Montressor.” I looked through the remaining opening but I couldn’t see anything. There came forth in return only a jingling of bells. I finally got my revenge; finally put an end to Fortuanto. Proceeding out of the vaults I started for the carnival. “Montressor! Where have you been? You missed the show.”
“There was a situation at home. When is the next show?” I asked Luchresi
“The next show begins in 10 minutes. Would you like to go watch the show with me?”
“Of course, I would be delighted to attend with you.”
All of a sudden the world goes dark and there is nothing but complete silence. I woke to the screams of Mary. “Montressor! Montressor!”
“I must have fallen asleep is breakfast ready?”
“Montressor, you look green are you feeling alright?”
No I’m not fine! I cannot sleep without the vivid haunting memory of what I did. I wish I could tell her, but she wouldn’t understand. Fortuanto got what he deserved. Therefore I replied, “Yes, I am feeling fine. Have you prepared breakfast for me?”
“Yes I have it’s in the kitchen.”
“Thank you, Mary. You are excused for the day, enjoy this wonderful warm morning.” With that being said she left from the study and made her way to the front door. I can’t stay in this house! I need to get out of here! I ran upstairs to my bedroom, and got dressed as quickly as I could. Then I made my way to the tavern. When I arrived at the tavern I saw Luchresi therefore I headed toward him to join him. “Hello, Luchresi.” I smiled as I greeted him.
“Good morning! I see we both are doing some early morning drinking.”
Laughing I replied, “That is correct I will have whatever you are having.”
Before I knew it I was too drunk to think clearly. Consequently I told Luchresi everything about what happened to Fortuanto. When it was all said and done, he looked at me with complete disgust. He got up and left without saying a word; I knew right then I was in for a lot of trouble. What was he going to do? Would he tell anyone? I’m still not thinking clearly I should just go home, everything will be fine; or so I thought. But when I arrived home, I saw a huge crowd standing in front of my door. There was no escaping my punishment anymore. The truth had come out and now I must face my consequences. I walked straight to the front of the crowd standing before them, I began to explain how I murdered Fortuanto. I know it shouldn’t have but it was a relief to finally tell the truth. Years of people questioning what happened to him and always looking over my shoulder to make sure no one suspected it was because of me that Fortuanto was missing. Finally it was all over but now what? I have lived a long life and now I’m ready to finally accept whatever punishment I receive. A man stepped forward from the crowd and told me, “Sir you are going to have to come to town with me.” I hesitated then I nodded my head and we started walking to town.
It was the longest walk into town I have ever taken, because of all the people of course. The whole time all I could think about is what are they going to do to me. In this town we hang or imprison murderers. Honestly I can’t think of which I would prefer if they gave me the option. If I was to be sent to prison, then I would serve a life sentence which in my case might not be that long. This sounds better than being hung. Finally, we made it to the Sheriff’s office, and I sat down in the chair right in front of his desk. He already knew why I was there, everyone in town knew by now what I had done. I suppose they would be shocked to know I was capable of murder. I however know exactly what I am capable of doing.
“Montressor, you know why you are here, am I correct?” Asked the Sherriff.
I shakily replied, “Yes, sir I know why I am here.”
He wore a shocked expression as he asked, “Then tell me, why are you here Montressor?”
I paused for a minute while I considered what I was about to admit to. “I am here because I murdered Fortuanto. I take full responsibility for my actions.”
“Take him to the dungeon.” The Sherriff commanded the
guard. With that final statement the guard took me to the dungeon. After I walked into the dungeon the guard locked the door but I just stood there with a slight grin on my face. And I sighed with relief because what they don’t know is I won’t be in there for long. I won’t be here for long.
