Benefits of FMEA
A tool to assist the engineer improve the quality and reliability of a design is FMEA, to include these benefits:
• Improve product/process reliability and quality
• Increase customer satisfaction
• Early identification and elimination of potential product/process failure modes
• Prioritize product/process deficiencies
• Capture engineering/organization knowledge
• Emphasizes problem prevention
• Documents risk and actions taken to reduce risk
• Provide focus for improved testing and development
• Minimizes late changes and associated cost
• Catalyst for teamwork and idea exchange between functions

Effects Analysis: The consequences of the various failure modes are determined by their severity to the customer being studied (Goetsch & Davis, 2013).
3. Failure Effects: The failure’s consequence in terms of operation, function, or status of the item (Goetsch & Davis, 2013). A “failure effect” is the result of a failure mode on the product or system function as perceived by the user. Failure effects can be described in terms of what the end user may see or experience (Siemens Product Lifecycle Management Software Inc., 2016).
4. Failure Mode Analysis: An analytical technique used to evaluate failure modes with the intent to eliminate the failure mode in future operations (Goetsch & Davis, 2013). A failure mode is defined as the manner in which a component, subsystem, system, process, etc. could potentially fail to meet the design intent. One component in a failure mode can serve as the cause of a failure mode in another component. Describe the effects of those failure modes. Identify the causes for each failure mode. Then enter the probability factor (DRM Associates,
