In her opinion piece “Fair’s Fair For Farmers,” Caitlin Fitzsimmons contends in an urgent yet didactic fashion that many companies are misusing Fair Trade; only supportive for their personal gain. She begins with ‘there’s a good reason to buy Fair Trade,’ arguing that purchases would deter those producers from slavery and exploitation. She argues that the buyer should understand how to find legitimate products as well as the importance of economics within the Fairtrade company.…
The essential part of utilitarianism, whether it is Act or Rule, is to promote the greatest overall utility for the given situation. If we look in terms of Utilitarianism, one would be in favor of killing Tom to save the other four children. Even though, Tom would be killed, he would promote overall utility by saving four people through his one body. This reminds me a lot of the Trolley problem we studied in Unit five. They killed one man to save multiple. This may be considered immoral in a way, but according to Act Utilitarianism, the correct choice and the one that promotes overall utility would be to kill Tom and use his body to save the four siblings. In an Act Utilitarian’s mind, they would first think “In what way could I promote the greatest utility for every single person in the situation?” They must then think about the situation. The mother and father could either lose Tom, or they could lose their other four children. The Doctor could either kill Tom and save the four children or let Tom live and watch the others die…
* Bargaining power of suppliers is low due to the huge number of coffee bean producers. And Starbucks purchases 14 percent of the fair trade-certified coffee in the world which makes it a big buyer who will not affected by the suppliers.…
The idea of utilitarianism classifies actions of being "morally" right or wrong solely based on the results and outcomes of the actions. This paper will analyze the problem that Arthur, "the art dealer", faces with artwork pieces he stumbles upon. Arthur's predicament is that he is given an opportunity to buy looted artworks. His dilemma is to either purchase or to not purchase the art work. This paper will evaluate the two analysis views of a utilitarian: act (extreme) and rule (restricted).…
The small but ever growing social movement, fair trade, attempts to oppose commodity fetishism and provide another option for the capitalist society is obstructed by the differences among all the participants of fairtrade in terms of their perceptions, intentions and interpretations of what constitutes “fair”. According to Kharel and Middendorf (2015) There are many differences among all the participants of fair trade at all levels in terms of their perceptions and interpretations of fair trade” (p. 255). Firstly there are certifying organizations such as FLO (Fairtrade Labelling International) and WFTO (World Fair Trade Organization) that act as governing bodies. These organizations developed a “Charter of fair trade principles” to relay a consistent definition and guidelines of those pursuing fair trade activities…
A single country may have the ability to produce everything well enough to meet the demands of the population. Certain countries have specialties that they are willing to give another nation for a fair trade. Specifically in Canada despite having harsh winters and short summers, the country is able to provide its population with various tropical fruits. Popular breakfast choices including bananas and oranges would not be available for Canadians if it were not for international trade. International trade has allowed ease in lifestyles by creating competition, enhancing quality of life and attracting investments, which is why Canada should increase international trade.…
A helpful way to understand the whole concept of International free trade is that it is primarily based on the idea of comparative advantage. A country has the comparative advantage of the production of a good when the opportunity cost of producing that good is lower relative to the other country. According to the Ricardian Model in an economy with two goods each country will produce both of those goods at some point along their production possibilities frontier in autarky. (Engardio) The labor in each country is divided into the production of each good and the marginal product of labor is determined by the level of technology. Levels of technology differ across countries thus no-trade prices differ as well. These differences in prices create an incentive for countries to trade.…
Fair trade helps cocoa farmers and traders have good jobs that pay well for the farmer himself and his family, which allows them to make high-quality cocoa for the company. Fair trade provides sustainability, by protection over the price of cocoa, so that farmers never have to sell their cocoa below the price that it should be. Fair trade is very fair and allows the farmers to invest in their farms and their villages. Since 1993, cocoa farmers in Ghana switched to a corporate business called Kuapa Kokoo. Their aim was to create a farmer owned company, where cocoa farmers could work together and trade their cocoa for better prices.…

The coffee shops could provide fair trade coffee beans to their consumers with a small increase to their bottom line. Jackman’s hunt for a coffee shop that sold fair trade coffee shows how niche the issue is in developed countries. In order to enact change in the trade system, people need to be aware and find ways to aid the fair-trade movement individually. The author creates a global awareness for fair trade by showing Jackman meeting with the UN ambassadors about fair trade programs. This section of the documentary shows how every person around the world is affected by the unfair trade prices. Developed countries could stop aiding undeveloped countries, if they gave the farmers a reasonable price for their goods. Also, the undeveloped country’s economies would grow, because the people would have more money to funnel into their…
Fair Trade is a charitable organisation that was founded in 1992 in order to promote sustainable production whilst fulfilling the farmer’s full potential in a fair and ethical way. Fair Trade have become a successful and well-known brand in a relatively short space of time, with Fair Trade products being sold in more than 125 countries and UK figures on Fair Trade sales reaching £1.5 billion in 2012.(Fair Trade ) Part of the reason Fair Trade has been so successful is the way it entices consumers with its positive message of helping the disadvantaged producers and creating wholesome, organic food. Fair Trade produce often comes with a higher price tag than normal, with bananas on average costing on average £1.20 for 6, and non-Fair Trade bananas costing £1.00 for 10. Despite this, 1 in 3 bananas sold are Fair Trade and 44% of bagged sugar sold is also Fair Trade, this shows that people are often willing to match the higher price tag when a product is more ethically produced. (Fair Trade Statistics)…
