Fair Trade is a trading partnership, based on dialogue, transparency and respect, that seeks greater equity in international trade. It contributes to sustainable development by offering better trading conditions to, and securing the rights of, marginalized producers and workers – especially in the South.
It provides a living wage. That is a wage high enough to provide the basics in that community.
It ensures that the farmer gets decent working conditions, that children cannot be used as child labour so can go to school.
It is protective towards the environment. Fair trade organizations usually give part of the costs upfront to pay for equipment and materials so farmers don't use/abuse scarce local resources in order to survive before payment for finished goods/produce is received.
Market price for products is always guaranteed, so in times of poor quality harvest or a glut, then the farmer still has a regular income.
Not all areas are good for growing certain crops. Coffee and chocolate for example have grades. If the farmer lives in a poor growing area, the price he receives for his coffee beans or cocoa beans will be very low. Fair Trade organizations buy these beans and mix them with others so the farmer will get a better price for his beans.
Many Fair Trade Organizations offer other benefits such as training, schools and medical facilities for the community.
