In her opinion piece “Fair’s Fair For Farmers,” Caitlin Fitzsimmons contends in an urgent yet didactic fashion that many companies are misusing Fair Trade; only supportive for their personal gain. She begins with ‘there’s a good reason to buy Fair Trade,’ arguing that purchases would deter those producers from slavery and exploitation. She argues that the buyer should understand how to find legitimate products as well as the importance of economics within the Fairtrade company.…

Fair trade attempts to provide opportunities to small producers but there is a “lack of knowledge of what fair trade is and how it works” among producers because it is the cooperative leadership that handles most of the “activities related to fair trade”(Kharel and Middendorf, 2015, pg. 256). This is what Kharel and Middendorf say contributes to the “lack of producer commitment” because they do not understand the vision of fair trade which often leads to “producers’ defection of both the fair trade network and cooperative when the producers receive a better price in the traditional market” (2015, pg. 256). With the slow rise but growing popularity, Fair Trade is still limited to few agricultural commodities and specific geographic locations. A study by Brown published in 2007 looks at closer at the impact of fair trade in Africa, specifically Ghana, Tanzania and Nicaragua where there is a struggle for fair trade companies to be profitable when it comes to chocolate and…

Many countries in the world are apart of free trade areas that have free trade agreements with other countries. What a free trade area? According to the World Book definition, a free trade area is, “an area in a country where goods can be imported without paying custom duties (import taxes). Foreign traders may store, exhibit, assemble, or process products in these zones before shipping them elsewhere for sale or use” (“World Book” 500). These free trade areas can differ from an entire city or territory where no customs duties are collected. Free trade areas are created to encourage the act of foreign trade by allowing countries to trade their goods in a more cheaply way than making the good in their home nation. Free trade can have positive…

The foundations of the fair-trade movement are built upon the producers, the famers, who everyone who participates in the coffee market relies upon. Their main principles are market access for marginalized producers, sustainable and equitable trading relationships, capacity building and empowerment, and consumer awareness raising and advocacy. These principles are instated to protect the famers from greatly fluctuating prices and the volatility of the product they grow. In many areas of the world, the consumers do not know how their coffee is created, and this ignorance is the basis of the fair-trade movement.…

Free trade has become one of the most controversial subjects of modern times. Though despite its challenges, the positive role it has been playing in the lives of millions of people around the world is commendable. It gives us access to new foods, products and experiences, and creates economic opportunity and markets. Free trade also allows countries to specialize in the production of goods that they have a comparative advantage and trading them for goods in which they have a comparative disadvantage. When countries engage in such trade, they can have more of both goods, which is a good deal. It also make the world a better place because more places will be able…

A trade is an interaction between two countries or regions involving the buying of imports of goods and services from overseas, and the selling of exports of goods and services abroad. What is The Free Trade Agreement? The Free Trade Agreement or FTA is more than just exchanging goods between Canada and America. The FTA, best understood in the words of Ronald Reagan is “ A new economic constitution for North America.” (Cameron Pg. 3). It is an exchange of goods between Canada and America, free of taxes on import and export products, so each of the countries benefits from the other’s industry. The signing of the Free Trade Agreement replaced the General Agreement on Trade and Tariffs or GATT. There are many advantages and disadvantages of the Free Trade Agreement between Canada and America, yet Canada is not getting much of a good deal, only in certain ways are Canadians at an advantage. Some advantages are: an increase in production, and better U.S-Canada relations. Some of the disadvantages are: diminished population growth, loss of jobs, diminished sovereignty, and workers facing concessions on wages, working conditions, and living standards.…
