Good and Evil depend on each other. Both of them cohere. Without Evil, there would not be any Good, as Safranski says that you cannot believe in the Devil without believing in God as one meets the Devil halfway to God . Evil is neccesarry in fairy tales as it fascinates everyone. What would fairy tales be without wicked witches, mean trolls and domineering monarchs? Snow White without the Evil Queen, Hänsel & Gretel without the witch in her delicious gingerbread house and Little Red Ridinghood without the ravenously wolf are simply unimaginable. Typically, most fairy tales have a rather similar structure. The hero has to go through various steps to, for instance, reach a higher social status. Even though this development does not necessarily make this rather good person a better person, but the hero certainly has to dispute with the evil to conquer it. But to achieve exactly that, the hero has to deal with it, it is crucial to accept it and allow it to be part of his or her life. In fairy tales, there is one one single acceptable reason to act evil, namely to conquer Evil. Coming back to the above mentioned tale of Hänsel & Gretel, Gretel only kills the witch to free her brother. This deed is sanctioned as it is the foundation of a happy life. As a result, Evil becomes an important element in one’s personal development and is therefore accepted as a part of social reality. According to Kast, it is not only the Good triumphing in fairy tales, rather it is the hero, but the hero is not always just good. Good and Evil are always facing towards each other as well as challenge each other, therefore, not Good or Evil win the battle but rather the urge or progress.
