INFORMATION
CPDLC (Controller Pilot Data Link Communication) applications allow communications between the ATC and Pilots by written preformatted messages, in addition to the standard voice communications.

Two different CPDLC standards exist: ATN-B1: this application supports CPDLC services becoming available and mandated over Europe, and relies on the use of new high-speed data VHF. FANS 1/A: this application supports ATC datalink services (CPDLC and ADS-C) already available over several remote areas (mainly oceanic routes).

The European Commission was the first regulatory authority to impose a CPDLC mandate for aircraft operators flying above FL 285 over its territory. For most operators, forward fit or retrofit requirements are based on whether the first issuance of individual Certificate of Airworthiness (CoA) was before or after January 1, 2011. Retrofit For airplanes with first individual CoA issued before January 01, 2011, operators must have their airplanes equipped with ATN-B1 CPDLC for all flights above FL 285 on February 5, 2015 at the latest. Air Navigation Service Providers EC N°29/2009 contains also requirements applicable to Air Traffic Service Providers. As a result: ATN-B1 services are already available in the Maastricht, Karlsruhe, Zurich and Geneva airspace From February 2013, ATN-B1 services is mandated over most of the western European airspace (in yellow) From February 2015, ATN-B1
