The ascension up the butte is the goal of the expedition. It would be completed in four stages: rock climb the first 150 vertical feet, and then climb 120 feet more. Special climbing ladders would assist us the next 200 feet. The final 130 feet could only be achieved after climbing more and scaling a difficult ledge. Each of the stages ended with a small area where the climber could stop and either let the rest of the group catch up if you’re in front or clear out if you’re in the back. I loved the first leg beyond my current vocabulary, the dangling rope represents 500 ft of consecutive plummeting. The feeling rewarded to the adventurer when staring straight down at the ground, which is 600 ft away, while hanging on a single rope is exhilarating! I have to admit that at the time, I felt a little timid and took my time, but if I could do it again I would plunge at least twice as fast. The whole group reached the bottom again by 7 pm. Exhaustion overcame me, and as soon as we got back to camp, I crashed on the back bench again and continued to sleep the whole way home.
That Saturday was one of the most memorable Saturdays I’ve ever lived and is a stark contrast to the rest of my elementary weekdays where my life was being lived, but my life was not being recorded.
