Fall of Troy
THE FALL OF TROY | |

THE STORY of the Iliad ends with the death of Hector, and it is from the Odyssey and later poems that we learn the fate of the other heroes. After the death of Hector, Troy did not immediately fall, but receiving aid from new allies still continued its resistance. One of these allies was Memnon, the Æthiopian prince, whose story we have already told. Another was Penthesilea, queen of the Amazons, who came with a band of female warriors. All the authorities attest their valor and the fearful effect of their war cry. Penthesilea slew many of the bravest warriors, but was at last slain by Achilles. But when the hero bent over his fallen foe, and contemplated her beauty, youth, and valor, he bitterly regretted his victory. Thersites, an insolent brawler and demagogue, ridiculed his grief, and was in consequence slain by the hero. | 1 | Achilles by chance had seen Polyxena, daughter of King Priam, perhaps on the occasion of the truce which was allowed the Trojans for the burial of Hector. He was captivated with her charms, and to win her in marriage agreed to use his influence with the Greeks to grant peace to Troy. While in the temple of Apollo, negotiating the marriage, Paris discharged at him a poisoned arrow, which, guided by Apollo, wounded Achilles in the heel, the only vulnerable part about him. For Thetis his mother had dipped him when an infant in the river Styx, which made every part of him invulnerable except the heel by which she held him. 1 | 2 | The body of Achilles so treacherously slain was rescued by Ajax and Ulysses. Thetis directed the Greeks to bestow her son’s armor on the hero who of all the survivors should be judged most deserving of it. Ajax and Ulysses were the only claimants; a select number of the other chiefs were appointed to award the prize. It was awarded to Ulysses, thus placing wisdom before valor; whereupon Ajax slew himself. On the spot where his blood sank into the earth a flower sprang up, called the

In Homer’s book The Iliad, Homer tells the story of the Trojan War with Achilles, the best Greek warrior. However, Achilles does not like Agamemnon, the king of Mycenae, because he took Briseis (Briseis was a woman that Achilles had received as a war prize). This is the reason why Achilles was raged at Agamemnon. In a rage, Achilles wants to kill all of the Trojans, especially Hector, the best Trojan warrior. Patroclus, Achilles’ best friend goes out to the battle field as Achilles (wearing his armor), trying to kill Hector but instead Hector kills Patroclus thinking he has killed Achilles. When Achilles finds out about this, he is very mad and goes out to kill Hector himself. When he kills Hector, he is very arrogant about it. Only after this happens does Achilles get Briseis back from Agamemnon.…

This gave him the name “Achilles,” meaning one with no lips. She suspended him by his for and caused him to not be immortal on his heel. This would later become Achilles biggest weakness and downfall. Achilles mother then hid him away from the world because she knew of his glorious power but his short life. As I have said Achilles was dishonored by Agamemnon. Agamemnon was the commander-in-chief of the Achaean (Greek) armies at Troy, and also the king of Troy. So Agamemnon had taken a woman named Chryseis as his slave. Her father Chryses, a priest of Apollo, begged Agamemnon to return her to him. Agamemnon refused and her father prayed to Apollo to help him get his daughter back. Apollo sent a plague amongst the Greeks. The prophet Calchas correctly determined the source of the troubles but would not speak unless Achilles vowed to protect him. Achilles said that he will protect him as long as he is alive and he would not let anyone harm him if he tells him the truth. So Calchas declared Chryseis must be returned to her father. Agamemnon consented, but then commanded that Achilles' battle prize Briseis be brought to replace Chryseis. Angry at the dishonor and at the urging of Thetis, Achilles refused to fight or lead his troops alongside the other Greek forces. She was something he had fought for, and Agamemnon just told him to give it up, while he could've done so himself too.…

As Achilles fights Trojans by the river, Skamandros speaks, “O Achilleus, your strength is greater, your acts more violent than all men’s… For the loveliness of my waters is crammed with corpses… since I am congested with the dead men you kill so brutally.”(Homer 446) Skamandros acknowledges Achilleus possesses strength unlike any other warrior, and inflicts bloodshed more than any other man. As a result of Achilles’s massacre, the river is packed with the bodies of the Trojans that Achilles has slaughtered. The congested river is a representation of Achilles’s brute force, and his ability to kill countless Trojans. The extent of his actions causes Skamandros, the river god to admits Achilles has great strength and more violent acts than any other Trojan or Achaeans, and shows the name Achilles has made for himself. His reputation obtained from his violent acts is acknowledged from even a god, and shows the extent of his violent acts has earned him great respect for his strength and heroic…

In book II of the Aeneid, Virgil depicts the fall of Troy as Aeneas tells his tale. Aeneas begins his story as the Greeks have constructed a giant horse. This was clearly an indication for the end of the war as there were no sign of the Greeks. However, this was a malicious trick by the Greeks as soldiers were in the hollow belly of the horse. At night, when the Trojans had fallen asleep, the Greek soldiers hidden in the horse came out, opened the gates, and gave the signal to the main army. Consequently, the war ends with the destruction of Troy and the flee of the Trojans. In this paper, I will try to discuss the primary reason for the fall of Troy.…
