Behind all fallacies there is major critical thinking. Not knowing how to think critical could jeopardize your argument in reasoning. Critical thinking, is analyzing further into a subject to get valid points in an argument. As we all know, fallacies are considered flawed ways into having invalid reasons. There are many reasons why fallacies are not very good to use in an argument. However, since there is a great quantity of fallacies. I will only discuss two fallacies, Faulty Analogy and Bandwagon.…

Secular Humanism regarding the question of origin, seems to lean toward the determination “that matter has always existed and given enough time and chance, the end result is what you see around you today.” (Weider, Gutierrez 64). There is a lack of evidence that God exists and man is viewed rather as a machine, having no control over their existence and once man’s life has come to an end, this machine ends (65). Humanists answer questions of identity by believing that, “mankind is a product of evolutionary forces” (66). Mankind is viewed as a more refined animal, however mankind is not of higher quality over the animal kingdom. The answers to the question of…

Within our society, the ability to think critically is vital to the continued growth of knowledge and overall advancement of humankind. That being said, often times people overlook its importance and it ends up sort of shoved under the rug. With this new generation of mass media, information is spread at such an unprecedented rate that the intake can become overwhelming, and the discernment (of it does not always occur) is then left up to the people to find whether it is actually fact or fiction. When people do not stop to critically think, they risk more than just spreading false information as it can impair higher order in one’s life, even leading to the loss of life. As illustrated through the Going to the Moon, Ball Toss, and JFK Assassination activities, thinking critically goes beyond just…
What information can be gathered from, "Begging the Question," "Hasty Generalization," and "Appealing to Emotion?" Though from first glance, they generally do not have much in common. However, when looking deeper, you will see that they are all different types of logical fallacies. Logical fallacies, by definition, are errors of reasoning. Or, to put it in a simpler form, errors that may be recognized and corrected by prudent thinkers (Downes, 1995). The following quote helps explain why logic is important to us in today 's society. "Logic is not everything. But it is somethingsomething which can be taught, something which can be learned, something which can help us in some degree to think more sensibly about the dangerous world in which we live (Fischer, 1970, p. 306)." Begging the Question is a type of fallacy that is used quite a bit. It is considered to be a fallacy of assuming when trying to prove something. One of the main things to remember with the use of this fallacy is that the term "Begging the Question" has a very specific meaning. This means that if someone was trying to prove something to us but they are not being specific and leave room for more questions, which is why this type of fallacy is said to be a "circular argument." When you are confronted with something that could possibly a form of "Begging the Question" one should consider all the facts, and question ones self in order to see if all the arguments line up, or if it is an implied interpretation or expression of the writer and/or speaker. One example of "Begging the Question," as can be use by a number of more fallacy 's is, "God must exist." One can surmise that God exists because it is written in the Bible. Another might question that assumption by asking, "Why should I believe the Bible?", or "Can the writings in the Bible actually be revered as God 's true word, or did someone just make them up?" However, another bigger…
One of the most apparent logical fallacies in Arthur Miller’s The Crucible, is called “No True Scotsman,” or rather, an appeal to purity to emphasize an argument. The play is set in a small town in Massachusetts in the late 1690s. This setting is well known for its overbearing Puritanism and its government that could almost be characterized as a theocracy. As a result of this emphasis on religion, the characters of the play often resort to fallacies that hold religious beliefs at the forefront of the argument. Many of these fallacies accentuate the fact that a true Puritan would or would not do something that a particular character has done, and thus said person is not a true Puritan. For example, when John Proctor is testifying in court, he…

The "peek-a-boo" world of television is one in which the medium assembles disconnected facts in a "pseudo-context" (76) structure designed to make them more coherent and relevant. This structure is false creating a world that is "endlessly entertaining" (77) but does not allow for critical thinking. Information is shown to the audience so quickly that it does not allow them to think critically about it.…
In The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano, Olaudah Equiano skillfully represents the equal capabilities of nobility and intelligence from the African people forced into slavery. While his writing is steeped with a high acumen and earnestness, there is also a lingering sense of withholding that comes forth to the modern reader. Between the time of Equiano 's tribulations and the time he penned his narrative, it was not the belief of the majority of Americans and Europeans that such slavery was wrong or evil--obvious by its long-standing practice. While our society today is much more privy to the certain horrors that occurred during the era of slavery, the people of this time were not so enlightened or understanding. This…

After reading this short tale of two men in college, and one not-so-bright college girl, I have learned many things about fallacies. In our powerpoint presentation, it says that each generation is to learn these fallacies. This tale of the college students and the teaching of fallacies was in a much different generation than we are in now. Some fallacies I learned of in this story that were different from the ones stated in my course text were, Dicto Simpliciter, Contradictory Premises, Ad Misericoriam, Hypothesis Contrary to Fact, and Poisoning the Well.…
