Families In Franz Kafka's Metamorphosis
Families are meant to work together so that that the whole is stronger than the individual. In the wild, these families were not necessarily related, but were groups that banded together for protection. Each member served a different purpose. Some would provide food, and others would protect the children. The female’s role was to look after the children. If one of the members did not keep a strong relationship with the other members, or did not do their duty, then the entire organization came crashing down. In Metamorphosis, Gregor should have spent more time with his family. He did not keep his relationships strong, and the entire family became dysfunctional.
In the novel Metamorphosis, Gregor kept to himself. He did his job, which was earning
money so that the family could live, but he didn’t do much else. He did not make his family aware of what was going on in his life, and they grew distant. During his time as a bug, it was implied that his family was not sure if Gregor was still alive inside the bug’s body. “when Gregor comes back to us again” Ms. Samsa said. If he had been more open with them before, then he would have had an easier time communicating. They would know his quirks, and be able to read his body language. His family would’ve been more connected to him before, and they would have remained close through that difficult time. Maybe if he wasn’t so depressed, and still had good relationships as a bug, he wouldn’t have died.
Gregor’s role in the family was to earn money. He applied himself totally to his job, and neglected other areas of his life. “Oh, God, he thought, what a strenuous career it is that I've chosen!”. His relationship with his family was not as close as it should have been. If, perhaps he had taken a day or two off work every now and then to spend time with his family, then they would have had a tighter relationship. Although his boss was very demanding, maybe he would have understood if Gregor had specifically asked for more time with his family.
Gregor’s poor relationship with his family was not entirely his fault. His parents pushed him to take the job, because they owed the owner a lot of money. If they had both made a conscious effort to support and love one another, then perhaps Gregor’s time as a bug would have been less stressful.
