I appreciate and thought the essays were illuminating. Peggy McIntosh’s piece was the most persuasive because it goes into specifics that allows readers to make personal and thus stronger connections. In closing, a point, I would like to raise about white privilege is that there is definitely individual variation in experience. Some European Americans have had it easier than others, most likely because they came from wealthy families that gave them even more privilege that just being white. Some European Americans have had it tougher than others because they came from families with less means.…

In examining the reasons causing the tragedy of the Ung family after the Cambodian Genocide in 1975, one can assume that these reasons include economic breakdown (continuity of the Angkar trading crops for firearms), government collapse (changes in the soldiers’ behavior towards the villagers, continuity of Khmer Rouge killing villagers at Lo Reap), and the lack of social interactions (changes in communication within the village of Lo Reap).…
The film Ordinary People main focus is on Conrad’s family issues. Many conflicts in the novel slowly destroy Conrad’s family. This raises the issue of Conrad trying to commit suicide. The major theme that defines this novel is healing. Calvin and Beth Jarrett, are both high middle class white parents living in the suburbs. They go out and party a ton ever since the devastating lost of their oldest son Buck, in a boating accident. This brings a negative vibe to the family, which is why Conrad and Kelvin start to attend a psychiatrist. The psychiatrist Dr. Berger convinces Conrad and Calvin to make them express exactly how they feel. The issues that the Jarrett family faces, contradicts the film’s title of them being an ordinary family. Once Conrad was released from the hospital, he gave the audience the message that he was not ready for the world. He was not ready to become independent and it was very difficult for him to let go off his past. Now was his chance to catch up with friends, and a swimming team to participate in. Although life at home was slowly recuperating, Conrad’s parents would leave the house to help clear their minds from their son’s death. Calvin would leave parties slightly drunk and so would Beth. The purpose at the end of the day was to have a fantastic time and to develop happiness to themselves. In the film there were flashbacks that always lead to a symbolism in the film. Conrad had so many nightmares he had to attend the psychiatrist Dr. Berger. It got to the point that Calvin had to join him too. Dr. Berger is considered a symbolism in the film because he is the analyzer of the family. He put’s a lot of effort trying to solve the problems that were involved with the Jarrett’s. He created solutions for Conrad and Calvin to release their thoughts that were never spoken. Another symbolism is a text to world connection. At one point of the film The Jarrett’s go to visit Beth’s mother and father for thanksgiving. After a intense argument…
In this ever-changing society in which we live in, is centered around many norms. A norm that has taken a large leap over the years deals with college education. In Margaret A. Miller’s “The Privileges of the Parents,” she discusses the impacts that a parent’s education has on their children. She does that by referencing the difference in the economic benefit received by individuals with a variety of educational backgrounds. To support her claim, Miller centered her essay around an old folk saying, “the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.” In which she used that saying and her knowledge to portray the concept of a student’s education being impacted either positively or negatively based on what their parents educational background it. Miller…
SOCIAL- Children that live in a way that varies from the norm can affect the way others see and relate to them; a child may be living with same gender or Trans gender parents, a child may be living with only one parent. Though the last part isn’t really that unusual, there are always different circumstances, a parent may have passed away, they may be in prison, they may be working abroad or even in the forces. The child’s parents may have separated and the child may divide their time between two parents.…
• These children often find it impossible to fit in. As a result, they live in their own chaotic world. In order for these children to achieve their full potential, they should receive help, guidance, and understanding from parents, guidance counsellors, and the public education system.…
The dynamics of the black family has not changed significantly since slavery. The role of the black parent has a significant impact on the family psychologically, emotionally, economically, educationally and physically. Traditionally, the family has been described as having a mother, father, and children. The black family has not strayed far from the traditional concept but has taken on non-traditional forms. Black family relationships differ from other races. The history of slavery, segregation and racism has an impact on the black family and community. The relationships between black men and black women have traditionally been strained because of the issues of racism, economic depression, and non-traditional lifestyles. To examine the psychology of black family relationships, one must understand the history of the black family and the evolution from slavery to present day.…
Over the past few weeks I have been observing how people with different race, ethnicity, religion, etc. are looked at differently and treated. Some stories I am going to share are of past experiences that I sought in the past few years. Most of these recordings have been in the workplace and one of a friend that kindly shared her experience with me. While doing these recordings on a notebook piece of paper, it hit me that life is not fair sometimes. People are cruel and don’t care what they say or do; hurt people. I myself never realized how I looked at people differently until this assignment.…
Fear and love often go hand in hand creating some of the ugliest situations in life. It is human nature to fear the unknown; often that fear arises when something we love is jeopardized. As Hirman Hillburn watches the events pertaining to the brutal murder of the innocent African American boy Emmet Till, he discovers that the South he craved for from his past has more flaws to it than meets a child-like eye. Through the view of an outsider in a segregated society, along with a mix of unconditional family love and clashing beliefs, we see the moral struggle humanity faces when its identity is put into question.…
Familial poverty is an exponential issue in our community, many factors contribute to poverty and many more concerning familial poverty. In the Denver Metro Homeless Initiative's most recent observational study, information indicates that a large percentage, two-hundred and twenty four out of three-hundred and forty households with children are homeless. While there are government programs to assist underprivileged and impoverished families such as welfare, food stamps, free and reduced lunch for children, and many more; on a situational basis, these programs do not always insure financial security. While there is an effort to assist those in need, many believe that these efforts are menial and are truly making no difference. Some institutions…
“I, Nick Cannon, take you Mariah Carey, to be my wife, to have and to hold from this day forward, for better or for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish; from this day forward until death do us part.” African American superstar, Nick Cannon has beat the odds of being an African American men and getting married. This vow is rarely said by most of the African American males population. Over the last twenty-five years, marriage rates among African American males have declined dramatically. By 1994, the percentage of never-married men increased to 42.4 percent and only 46 percent of African American men were married (Statistical Abstract of the United States, 1995). This in fact has only worsened as shown…

Oppression signifies an authority of a dominant group over a monitory group, disengaging the minority group from society. It involves mistreatment of a group, which is founded by individual stereotypes, systematic beliefs and attitudes, which become justification for continued mistreatment of members of these groups. This paper will review three forms of oppression and how the dominant members in society use their power and privilege to influence to continue the cycle of oppression.…
