nse13. FAMILY THERAPY * History of the therapy (Short) The rise of Family Therapy was during the 1950s and 1960s but there were already great contributions by psychologists during the 1920s. The pioneers of this therapy believed that a person’s behaviour is ultimately influenced by the relationships in family system. Those who have good family relationships were seen to have better behaviour, thoughts and emotions than those who have unstable family relationships. The famous contributor to family therapy is Virginia Satir. According to her, in order to have a healthy family life, everyone in the family should share their feelings and affections. Other important concepts in this therapy are love and nurturing. Another great contributor is John Elderkin Bell. He developed a step-by-step treatment plan for the whole family. His plan involved how to improve communication and make solutions to family problems. Meanwhile, Nathan Ackerman suggested that all members of the family should be included, not just the person experiencing difficulty. He also mentioned that this is the best therapy for children. * How the therapy works in practice Usually, family therapy is conducted within the homes of the family. Everyone is allowed to speak, ask questions and learn more about the problem. Normally the person diagnosed is the one who shares his experiences, feelings and thoughts about his condition to make his family members aware. It is also possible for other relatives to join the sessions. This therapy is not exclusive for family members, basically, all people who are in support of the client’s condition are included. Family therapy lasts for about 3 to 12 months. There is also delegation of leadership, it could be the father, mother, children who all have the voice to speak and to be listened to. * Goals of the therapy / What the therapy wants to accomplish “Help family gain positive communication, solve

You did a good job pointing out the structural family therapy and the systems within the family structure. How structural family therapy understand a family system is when the family system is stabilized by each family members contribution to the family system as a whole. By each member’s contribution, the subsystems hierarchy is set and power or who is in charge is allocated within the appropriate individuals/subsystems. The subsystems they rely on each other and more is expected from one person than another (Becvar & Becvar,2013). So for example: A couple dates and a year later yet married. Six months after getting married the woman finds out she is pregnant and nine months later a child is born. There is now a shift in the family system. Roles are now set in place and the mother is the nurture and the father becomes the disciplinarian as the child…

The roots of family therapy emerged out of individual therapy in 1950 when they realized that it was necessary to look at outside influences on the individual to help understand and treat their presenting problem (Clough, p, 2). Psychotherapy then expanded to include group approaches further enriching communication and relationships. In 1960, systemic changes began to include social and political ideals from where “distinct schools of family therapy” developed in 1970 (Clough, p. 2). Going forward, changes in philosophy furthered political and societal horizons toward constructivism and social constructionism (Clough, p. 2). “Constructivism suggests that there is no single reality only different perspective of the same situation, which is influenced by a person personality, situation, and experiences “(Clough, p. 2). “Social constructionism builds upon that perspective and includes social and cultural views which shapes the individuals meaning and affects their behaviors, interactions, and emotional responses” (Clough, p. 2). These changes over time have helped to evolve the therapist role from the “expert’ to the collaborator. From here, the emphasis and role of language and communication was implemented by the Milan systemic school which suggests that the two can…

However it was developed much earlier, with the contribution of multiple psychologists and approaches. First we have Alfred Adler, who focused on siblings and parents relationship and psychological birth order in one’s family. Second is Murray Bowen, who was one of the original developer of the therapy, from psychoanalytic principle and referred it as multigenerational family therapy. Following psychologists were Virginia Satir, Carl Whitaker, who focused mostly on the therapist and the family relationship and more (Corey, 2005). The therapist will help the family learn to communicate by modeling and many different exercises that will help them develop better communication skills. The structural approach is used when the family structure is out of balance. The family therapist will help align the family structure by establishing the roles and responsibilities of each family member. The family systems approach is used when the family is not working as a team, but as an individual entity. A family connection and boundaries must be set with the help of the therapist for this approach to be successful. The strategic family approach will help families develop rules and spread out the power within the family dynamic. The family therapist will also help a family work on a pattern of behavior that is appropriate for each family. A therapist will use tools from behavior therapy and behavior modification therapy with the social learning approach. This approach helps members of a family cope with issues and teach them basic skills in communicating, interacting, and behaving as a family unit. I agree with your example of individuals participating in individual therapy are for those who feel it would be much easier to express their feelings with someone who does not have any prejudice or have any personal influences. For me personally I would want to work on my own issues before I participate in family therapy. Conflicts that arise in family therapy will be difficult to deal with at home. It will be hard to forget the things said in the session when you live with the people are are in conflict with. I think families who attend family therapy should not leave the session full of conflict. If they can try come to an understanding and try to work on any issues they have while considering the feedback and advice of the therapist would…
