It was originated by theorist Dr. Murray Bowen's in the beginning of the 1950's. Family therapy has been known to treat and help situations involving complicated marriages, behavioral problems, and addiction. It is a very beneficial technique to create a stress-free environment and allow families to have healthier interactions with each other. Family relationships are viewed as very important methods to maintain mental health. Family doesn’t always have to be blood related, it can be anyone who has served a long-term supportive role in anyone's life such as friends, colleagues, and mentors. With that being said, family therapy usually encourages everyone that is being affected to join and participate as a unit to find better and long-lasting results. For example if a married couple is having extreme unhealthy issues then it would be recommended for them to bring their children or other immediate family such as their parents or siblings to a group session so the problem can be resolved in a broader aspect. Another example that is very common is when a family has an individual that is suffering from drug addiction. An intervention followed by family therapy is extremely beneficial and includes a number of helpful resources. Addiction affects the entire family and usually many take on certain roles such as an enabler. Family therapy can allow relationships to be repaired and offer healthier coping skills. Family therapy is usually introduced when the individual has been in treatment for mental illness or addiction and has made progress in recovery. It is important for the individual who is struggling to learn consistency and that requires everyone in their family to be on the same
