This paper will give a brief background of Family Therapy and critique the various family systems approach. In addition, the paper will address the approaches that I will apply as a therapist. At DJJ I am surrounded with young boys who have committed crimes of rape, murder, selling drugs and gang violence. Many of them come from broken homes, single family households, suffer from abandonment issues, and diagnose with ADHD and Conduct disorder. CBT allows me the tools to teach the youth to redirect their anger and equip them with the necessary skills to learn problems solving techniques. Experiential, Feminist, Narrative and Transgenerational therapy are additional approach to therapy which can be utilized during family counseling. The next approach that I found most beneficial was Solution Focused therapy. “It is a brief, pragmatic treatment that integrates a problem focus with a social constructionist perspective.” It is a talking therapy that is based upon what the clients wants to achieve through therapy rather than on the problem. The focus is not on the past, but instead, focuses on the present and future. The goals are establish at the beginning of the sessions and they are realistic and achievable. In conclusion, family system theory allowed me the opportunity to learn about different approaches to therapy which will assistant me in developing my on theory of practice. The information and knowledge I gain from this course will be most beneficial to my future as a
