Unit 7:Assignment
The key social issues contributing to the need for Criminal Justice practitioners are Poverty, Racism, and Sexism. Poverty, is the inability to satisfy one's basic needs because one lacks income to buy services or from lack of access to services. Racism is the belief that race accounts for differences in human character or ability and that a particular race is superior to others also discrimination or prejudice based on race. Sexism is discrimination based on gender, especially discrimination against women. Attitudes, conditions, or behaviors that promote stereotyping of social roles based on gender.
Poverty, places an important role with criminal justice practitioners as well as our society. Some say that’s it a misconception that people commit crimes due to poverty. I don’t feel like it’s the case with everyone but it does play a key factor due to some of the crimes being committed. Some people tend to steal in order to feed their hungry families. The likelihood of a one’s stealing depends on the degree of need to satisfy one’s wants. A well-off man may choose to steal just out of greed as opposed to a homeless man who desperately needs to feed his family. Once that individual is arrested for stealing and sent off to serve jail time, what happens once the individual is released from jail, they still no funds to aid in the transition like finding an apartment, finding transportation, and finding food and clothing, how does that increase his/her possibility of making a U-turn shortly after release and going back to prison? Prisoner rehabilitation programs are also offered by some social organizations. They help these people to refrain and reform from criminal activities. The program identifies the skills and potential that the person has and gives training to improve their skill so that they earn something for their decent living.
